One Piece: What the Seraphim Naming System Says About Them

The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1068, “A Genius’s Dream,” by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul and Vanessa Satone, available in English from Viz Media.

Some One Piece fans have been wondering about the World Government’s new model of Pacifistas, the Seraphim. More specifically, they’ve been trying to figure out who these machines were supposed to be modeled after. However, Chapter 1068, “A Genius’s Dream,” seems to have added another piece to the puzzle.

It seems that the naming system for the Seraphim has been confirmed. Not only that, but the names follow a distinct pattern that’s fairly easy to understand. With this, it’s much easier to get an idea of what the World Government had in mind and what kinds of Seraphim to expect in the future.

How Are the Seraphim Designated?

The only namedrop before this point was in Chapter 1065, “Six Vegapunks.” Here, the Seraph named after Jimbei was referred to as S-Shark. The reasoning behind this name seemed pretty obvious, but there wasn’t enough evidence to confirm any other names, nor did it give away who else could be a Seraphim. For all the average English reader knew, this was just a stutter.

Chapter 1068 provided many more names. The names of the Seraphim modeled after Bartholomew Kuma, Boa Hancock, and Dracule Mihawk were confirmed to be called S-Bear, S-Snake, and S-Hawk respectively. The S is likely short for “Seraph” or “Seraphim.” From here, it’s much easier to detect a pattern.

All of the Seraphim are not only modeled after the Warlords but they’re also named after the animal they’re named after. This seems to confirm the theory that all of the Seraphim are modeled after Warlords. At the same time, it debunks any theories regarding what other pirates could be seen as Seraphim if any. In that regard, the possibilities for future Seraphim have been narrowed down significantly.

This only leaves the question of whether the newer Warlords have been made into Seraphim. Unlike the original lineup, warlords like Trafalgar Law, Blackbeard, and Buggy aren’t necessarily named after an animal. That said, they have been associated with animals through the SBS and Vivre Card Databook; Law has been likened to a spotted seal or a snow leopard; Blackbeard, a hippopotamus; Buggy, a panda. They could theoretically be made into Seraphim though it’s more likely that the World Government will stick to the older Warlords.

What Other Seraphim Can Be Expected?

If the Seraphim really are modeled after the old Warlords, then there should be a few undisclosed Seraphim. Seraphim modeled after Crocodile, Gecko Moria, and Donquixote Doflamingo could be somewhere out there. The established Seraphim are one thing, but it would certainly be something to see how the Straw Hats react to former arc villain Seraphim.

Nothing’s set in stone yet, but the pattern definitely seems to be setting in. If any more Seraphim are set up, they should be expected to look like one of the unused Warlords. The most likely new ones to appear are S-Crocodile, S-Gecko, and S-Flamingo. That said, the pirates of the world should hope the World Government doesn’t have anymore Seraphim to deploy.
