One Piece Reportedly Set for Two Gear 5 Episodes

Luffy’s famous Gear 5 form will reportedly make its debut appearance in upcoming episodes of One Piece.

As detailed on Sportskeeda, a One Piece leaker, who goes by @WeeklyLeaks on Twitter, recently spotlighted @EriesuInformer’s reveal about how Luffy would awaken Gear 5 in Episode 1071. This is by far Luffy’s most formidable form, giving the pirate near unlimited wells of power. @WeeklyLeaks’ post also features what appears to be a screencap of Gear 5 Luffy, showcasing his dark red eyes and revamped hairstyle. Another Twitter user called @OP_SPOILERS2023 also shared the news to their followers, reporting that Gear 5 would also appear in Episode 1072.

About Luffy Awakening Gear 5

Luffy awakened his Gear 5 form when he consumed the Hito Hito no Mi Model, otherwise known as the Nika Devil fruit. Unlike the Gomu Gomu no Mi, Hito Hito no Mi allows Luffy to acquire traits and abilities from a powerful warrior called Nika, who was once revered as a God. Not only does this fruit greatly increase Luffy’s speed, strength and endurance, it also grants him the power to perform any feat that he can think of. This means that Luffy is only limited by the power of his own imagination. Gear 5 becomes a major asset to the pirate in his final fight against Emperor Kaido, which the anime is currently covering.

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece is the #1 best-selling manga title in history, with well over 516 million copies in circulation worldwide (as of June 2023). The franchise’s last feature film, One Piece Film: Red, also became Japan’s highest-grossing film of 2022, earning a staggering 18.78 billion yen (roughly $134.5 million) in ticket sales. The film also performed well outside the country, grossing over $35.5 million collectively from international box offices. One Piece: Film Red, packaged with three special episodes, will release on Blu-Ray on July 11.

In addition to Luffy’s animated Gear 5 form, One Piece fans can also look forward to seeing the Straw Hat pirate crew come to life in the franchise’s first-ever live action adaptation. A collaborative effort between Tomorrow Studios, Netflix and Shueisha, this series stars Inaki Godoy (The Imperfects) as Monkey D. Luffy. Additional confirmed cast members include Jacob Gibson (Blairsden) as Usopp, Mackenyu (Rurouni Kenshin live action) as Roronoa Zoro , Emily Rudd (Hunters) as Nami and Taz Skylar (The Lazarus Project) as Sanji. While Netflix announced that the show would debut in 2023, the company also assured Oda that it wouldn’t release One Piece until he was satisfied.

The One Piece manga is available in English from VIZ. The One Piece anime series is available to stream on Hulu, Netflix and Crunchyroll.
