The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1070, “The Strongest Form of Humanity,” by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul and Vanessa Satone, available in English from Viz Media.
Jewelry Bonney is supposed to be a major figure in One Piece’s Egghead Arc. She’s on the island of science to coerce Dr. Vegapunk into making her father Bartholomew Kuma human again. For how big her role is supposed to be, however, she hasn’t gotten to do a lot in the latest chapters.
Bonney has been unconscious since Chapter 1067, “Punk Records.” She didn’t wake up until Chapter 1070, “The Strongest Form of Humanity.” Technically, this was only three chapters ago, but a lot has happened since then; there have been all sorts of revelations, key plot points, and even fights within that period. This, coupled with the two breaks since then, makes it feel like she’s been unconscious for much longer than she probably has.
How Long Was Jewelry Bonney Out cold for in Manga Time?
It’s important to remember just what it was that made Bonney pass out. She found a laser sword in Egghead’s scrapyard, which seemed like it was going to make her much more dangerous. Unfortunately, the reason it was scrapped was that it attracted insects, which Bonney is deathly afraid of. When a swarm of insects was attracted to the light of the sword, she got so freaked out that she fainted.
Between Bonney’s passing out in Chapter 1067 and Chapter 1070, several revelations were made. Many of them were surrounding Vegapunk; the nature of his Brain-Brain Fruit and Punk Records; the “failure” of Momonosuke’s Devil Fruit; the origin of the Iron Giant; his dream to provide free energy to the world; his theory on the origin of Devil Fruits; the difficulty of artificially reproducing Devil Fruit powers. There were also revelations surrounding the Seraphim, including their naming system, their Devil Fruit abilities, and their capacity for independent thought. Additionally, Rob Lucci showed off his Devil Fruit Awakening and Stussy might have a connection to MADS. Not all of this is relevant to Bonney personally, but she does have a lot of catching up to do.
Several key plot points also happened in this period. Luffy agreed to take Vegapunk off of Egghead, CP0 invaded Egghead, Kizaru was confirmed to be on his way, Vegapunk Atlas and Sentomaru were taken out, the Seraphim fell under CP0’s control, and Luffy’s team made it to Labophase. Between the scrapyard and the vacuum rocket to Labophase, the Supernova had to be either slung over Luffy’s shoulder or princess carried by Chopper.
Luffy even managed to fit in a rematch with Lucci before Bonney woke up. The battle may have only lasted two chapters, but it was also one of the most highly anticipated rematches of the series. If anything made the time between Bonney passing out and waking up feeling like it was going slower, it was the hype and speculation surrounding this one fight.
How Long Was Jewelry Bonney Out cold for in Real-Time?
It’s also important to remember the amount of time that passed in the real world while Bonney was unconscious. Chapter 1067 was released on Nov. 21 while Chapter 1070 was released on Dec. 26. In other words, Bonney has been out for more than a month in real-time. That must be one heck of a fear of bugs.
It would be best if Bonney didn’t pass out again for her own sake. If she can stay unconscious through an entire fight among many other things, that puts her at a serious disadvantage. Given the coming assault of CP0 and the Marines, she can’t afford to stay slung over any more people’s shoulders this arc.
