One of One Piece’s most popular fan theories has been brought to life through impressive cosplay.
Shared on Reddit, the Sir Crocodile costume reimagines the Desert King’s mafia-style suit as an elegant suit dress, while also featuring the character’s signature golden hook and facial scar. The post is titled “Crocodile aka Luffy’s Mom,” directly referencing the prominent theory that the leader of Baroque Works and the former Warlord of the Sea is actually the future King of the Pirates’ other biological parent.
The Luffy’s Mom One Piece Fan Theory
The Crocomom theory (as it is often referred to as) uses a plethora of in-universe evidence to support its claims, including the Desert King’s connections to Okama Kingdom leader Emporio Ivankov — whose Devil Fruit powers allow him to control hormones — and Sir Crocodile’s actions during the Summit War. While mangaka Eiichiro Oda has not confirmed the identity of Luffy’s another parent at the time of writing, he has seemingly verified Sir Crocodile’s status as a transgender man in a recent chapter of the manga.
Making its debut in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1997, the ongoing One Piece manga has well over 1,000 chapters, and the story follows Luffy as he and his eclectic pirate crew sail the Grand Line in search of the titular hidden treasure. The series features a surprising amount of LGBTQ+ representation and gender diversity for a mainstream manga; canonical examples of queer One Piece characters include the transgender swordswoman Kikunojo, the flamboyant pirate Bentham the Wild (aka Mr. 2 Bon Clay) and Yamato, the Son of Kaido of the Beasts.
Sir Crocodile isn’t the only fan-favorite character to inspire recent examples of cosplay. Another Reddit user uploaded their interpretation of Donquixote Doflamingo, the former World Noble and King of Dressrosa, that fully captures the pirate’s charismatic and overconfident personality. Similarly, a third Reddit user posted their take on Soul King Brook. The rocking cosplay recreates the character’s skeletal physique and his colorful sense of fashion.
Moreover, many other characters beyond Sir Crocodile have ignited fan speculation, creating wild theories. Most notably, Red-Haired Shanks, the pirate who gave Luffy is iconic straw hat, has been the focus of much conjecture since the release of Chapter 1086, “The Five Elders.” Other characters recently at the center of ample fan speculation include Nefertari Vivi and King of the World Imu.
