One Piece Creator’s High Praise For Jujutsu Kaisen’s Mangaka

From one great to another, One Piece’s mangaka had nothing but glowing comments for Jujutsu Kaisen’s mangaka.

Translated by Jさん ( ֊’ ‘֊) (@/soukatsu_), Eiichiro Oda, the mangaka for One Piece, wrote about the first time he met the elusive and enigmatic creator of Jujutsu Kaisen. “I got to talk properly with [Gege] Akutami-san at the Tezuka prize judging committee for the first time,” Oda said, exclaiming. “What a reliable person! A person of character.” At the 105th Tezuka Manga Award, controversial mangaka Nobuhiro Nishiwaki joined Akutami and Oda along with Dragon Ball mangaka Akira Toriyama, Blue Exorcist mangaka Kazue Kato and My Hero Academia mangaka Kōhei Horikoshi.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Enigmatic Creator

Akutami has kept an extremely low profile, not disclosing their pronouns, their real name, appearance or much else. However, the mangaka has demonstrated a remarkable sense of humor when they have talked about themselves. In June 2021, Jujutsu Kaisen took a short break due to Akutami’s health, on account of them “lying prone for two and a half days,” although the mangaka insisted they were “not suffering from any serious illness.” In August 2020, they jokingly wrote, “I’m all lethargic, and I have many more white hairs. A side effect of paying my taxes?” Akutami published a four-chapter series called Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School in 2017, later serving as a prequel to Jujutsu Kaisen. The latter debuted in Weekly Shōnen Jump in March 2018.

Oda submitted his first work Wanted! at the age of 17, earning second place at the Tezuka Award. Two years later, he worked as an assistant to Watsuki on Rurouni Kenshin and later wrote two pirate-themed one shots called Romance Dawn. The protagonist later went on to become the protagonist of One Piece. One Piece began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1997 and has 105 volumes. Aside from a hugely successful anime franchise, One Piece has also inspired a live-action Netflix series which Oda will supervise over, promising fans “we won’t launch it until I’m satisfied.”

Two of the most popular manga in this generation, One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen boast high manga sales. One Piece has recorded over 516.6 million copies in circulation as of August 2022. While Jujutsu Kaisen still has a long ways to go, its numbers are still impressive, tracking over 70 million copies as of August 2022 with its manga and related series like Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

Both currently ongoing, One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen are available to read on Viz Media.
