One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda uses his wealth in admittedly ‘ridiculous’ ways.
With a net worth exceeding $200 million, Eiichiro Oda is the highest-earning manga artist in the medium’s history. A One Piece fan, who goes by Sandman (or @SandmanAP) on Twitter, recently uncovered an interview where Oda details some unusual ways he has enjoyed his wealth over the years. “I made a lot of money even though I only enjoyed my ridiculous drawings, so I decided to spend my money on ridiculous things.” Oda said. Sandman’s post includes photos of a few noteworthy examples, such as a shark toilet and a dragon bathtub.
The aforementioned “shark toilet” is an ordinary toilet with a giant shark head overhead. The room’s wallpaper also showcases an underwater scene with a shark swimming by. Oda’s “dragon bathtub” similarly features a standard tub with a large dragon statue attached to the wall, its curved body emerging at several different points. Oda also has what appears to be a life-size giraffe statue, as well as a highly-detailed Terminator replica. One of the doorways of Oda’s home even pays tribute to Sir Henry Morgan, a famous pirate captain from the 1660s.
Oda’s Philanthropic Endeavor
While Oda definitely does not shy away from spending his money on himself, the artist has also given a significant amount to charitable causes. When Oda’s hometown of Kumamoto, Japan suffered damage from an earthquake, he donated over 800 million yen (about $5.52 million at time of writing) to the town’s reconstruction efforts. This generous donation silenced critics that initially rejected Oda’s proposal to erect One Piece statues designed to raise money for the cause. These statues are still on display in different areas throughout Kumamoto.
One Piece still reigns as the best-selling manga title of all time, with over 516.6 million copies in circulation worldwide. The franchise’s last film, One Piece Film: Red, also topped Japan’s box office charts last year, ultimately becoming the nation’s highest-earning movie of 2022. This summer, the series will see the premiere of its first-ever live-action adaptation. Produced by Netflix and Tomorrow Studios, this show stars Inaki Godoy (The Imperfects) as Monkey. D. Luffy. Last month, Netflix unveiled the series’ first official trailer, which spotlighted Luffy, Nami, Zoro and Buggy the Clown. The show has a premiere date of Aug. 31.
One Piece is available to stream on Netflix, Hulu and Crunchyroll. The manga is available in English from VIZ Media
