Eiichiro Oda revealed that he improvised a defining moment from One Piece.
According to translated text by sandman (sandman_AP), Oade made up the fan-favorite One Piece moment at the last minute. The tweet reads: “Oda: I came with up this scene right before the deadline of submitting my manuscript in the week. (Jump Festa in 2014).”
The scene in question comes from the conclusion of the Arabasta Arc, where the Straw Hat Pirates wave goodbyes to everyone in the Arabasta Kingdom, specifically princess Nefertari Vivi. While Vivi’s time as a Straw Hat Pirate is over, Monkey D. Luffy and her friends assure her that she will always be a member of their crew. As a way of showing their support to Vivi, the Straw Hats turn their backs and raise their fists triumphantly in the air, showing the “X” tattoo they used to distinguish each other from Bon Clay’s physical imitations.
The Scene’s Iconic Legacy
The emotional gesture by the Straw Hats leaves Vivi in tears. The scene had become so synonymous with Vivi that when they modernized the One Piece characters as high schoolers for a series of commercials by Nissin Foods, her 30-second ad ended with the Straw Hats raising their instant noodle cups in the air to show their solidarity with her, as Vivi transferred to a different school
While longtime One Piece fans may be surprised to hear that such a memorable scene from the series was made so spontaneously by Oda, it’s actually in line with the manga creator. Many of the major storylines in One Piece weren’t pre-planned but actually retconned to fit the narrative. Additionally, Oda uses fan sites to help him keep track of all the characters, storylines and mysteries he’s written for the series. The One Piece manga is currently entering its final voyage, but Oda assures fans that the series won’t end anytime soon.
The One Piece anime is available on multiple streaming services like Crunchyroll and Netflix. A live-action TV adaptation of the series will air on Netflix. Viz Media handles the English release of the One Piece manga.
