The following contains spoilers for One Piece Chapter 1065, “Six Vegapunks,” by Eiichiro Oda, Stephen Paul and Vanessa Satone, available in English from Viz Media.
Chapter 1064 of One Piece has dropped a couple of bombs. Jewelry Bonney finally confesses her true identity and relation to Bartholomew Kuma to Luffy and the gang. Meanwhile, Franky and the other Straw Hats are receiving a tour from no other than Lilith The Evil. The Vegapunk satellite is giving them an in-depth explanation of the island’s facilities and locations. The place above the clouds, which heavily resembles a sky island, is called the Labophase. It is where all the research happens, while the area where Luffy and Bonney are wreaking havoc is referred to as the Fabriophase. It is the place where the workers’ residences and factories are located. While Lilith is giving the Straw Hats a tour, Shaka receives a call from Dragon. He reveals to the head of the Revolutionary Army the possibility of his imminent death.
On another part of New World, two pirate crews continue their face-off. Blackbeard joins in on the attack and barrages Law with his dark and quake powers. Law fights back using his newly-refined Devil Fruit Awakening powers. The two pirate captains stand on equal grounds, neither getting an edge over the other. While Law and Blackbeard are having their bout, the other members of the Heart Pirates have launched their underwater assault at one of Blackbeard’s warships. The attacks cause the ship to experience turbulence, prompting one of the jail guards to apologize to their precious prisoner — Charlotte Pudding.
One Piece’s Chapter 1065 brings the story back to Egghead. Zoro and Brook mull over their current setup. Zoro wonders how his crew mates will escape should they be captured, since Egghead is technically still government property. Brook agrees with the swordsman, though he doesn’t seem to be much bothered by it. At that moment, Caribou appears. Zoro is surprised that the notorious rookie remains in their company since he seems eager to separate ways with them. Caribou also echoes Zoro’s worry. Given that Egghead is a government island, alighting there is almost the same as offering himself to the government on a silver platter.
In the lab, the Straw Hats, who are touring the place, marvel at the technology they see. They can’t help but ask Lilith how the mechanisms work. Lilith doesn’t bother hiding anything. She explains that the entire island is powered by fire. They transform the resource into various types of energy and use it to run the island. It is so efficient that Lilith claims that creating a sun is only a matter of acquiring an undying flame. During her explanation, Lilith passes through a metal door like it is nothing. The Straw Hats are told to simply follow her, but what greets them after is a familiar figure.
They see a younger version of Jimbei sitting in front of a vat with the words Seraphim 04 written on it. Baffled by the encounter, the Straw Hats start to hypothesize about this Jimbei’s origin. However, they don’t get much time to do so. The Jimbei Seraphim starts to attack them, but the Straw Hats manage to dodge it with ease. Nami is the first to fight back. But before she can do anything, the Seraphim dives into the floor and swims toward the navigator. The Seraphim then clutches Nami’s neck, prompting Sanji to take action. Since Nami is already put in danger, Robin also follows suit with the attack.
The Jimbei Seraphim uses its Fish-Man Karate to fight against Robin, so Usopp strikes him down before he reaches the archeologist. However, the Seraphim vanishes. The next time it appears, it is already behind the sniper. Franky then grabs that opportunity to shoot the Seraphim with his laser. Seeing the cyborg’s attack, another Dr. Vegapunk satellite, Edison The Thinker, immediately orders the Seraphim to dodge. Almost getting the Seraphim destroyed, Edison sighs in relief after seeing the Seraphim safe and sound.
Lilith reappears beside Edison, angered about almost losing a very expensive Seraphim. Just then, Edison receives enlightenment and speeds off to realize it. Edison pushes the aftercare to Pythagoras The Wise, who willingly accepted the job. While Edison jots down their new ideas, they ask York The Greedy to continue consuming food. Meanwhile, Pythagoras analyzes the battle data they have gathered. According to them, the Seraphims’ attack patterns evolve as they grow. This opens the possibility of the Bloodline Elements keeping records of one’s experiences.
Shaka then arrives. He tells the Seraphim to stand down and return. He also tells off Lilith, Edison, and Pythagoras, earning Lilith’s fury. Meanwhile, the Straw Hats are also forced to stand down. They are rendered immobile as their shoes get glued to the floor, allowing Shaka to officially introduce himself to the Straw Hat Pirates. Shaka admits that he can’t trust any pirate. He also confirms that Lilith, Edison, and him are all Dr. Vegapunks. Hearing that, Usopp gets a minor existential crisis. He questions reality and wonders if he himself is also Vegapunk, though Franky swiftly assures him he is not.
Shaka redirects them back to the topic by asking whether they think the island is futuristic. Franky gives a quick yes. Recalling the existence of the mecha sea beasts and the island’s air systems, he goes as far as saying it the island is the super-future. Nami also agrees, saying that she has never seen an island like Egghead. However, Shaka tells them that the island is actually in the past. He further expounds that there was once a highly advanced kingdom that existed 900 years in the past. At the same time, Luffy and the others find a ruin filled with mechanical junk. Sitting in the middle is a gigantic broken robot.
