My Hero Academia’s manga series is set for a two-week break due to the mangaka’s health.
According to Shonen Jump News (@/WSJ_manga), My Hero Academia will release its next chapter in Issue No. 17 of Weekly Shōnen Jump, taking a short two-week hiatus because of Kōhei Horikoshi’s poor health condition. Weekly Shōnen Jump published the manga’s last chapter, “Don’t Let Him Go,” on March 2. Chapter 383 will release on March 26.
My Hero Academia Manga Hiatuses
This announcement comes approximately a month after his last hiatus, on Feb. 2, when the mangaka took a break for two weeks for the same reason. The manga resumed serialization on Feb. 20. Prior to this, Horikoshi took a week off in December 2022 for his health and another hiatus in October. The My Hero Academia creator apologized for the breaks, writing in the author comments, “I’m sorry for all the breaks. My schedule is a mess. I’m getting back on track.”
Horikoshi isn’t the first, and will likely not be the last, mangaka to take a hiatus due to concerning health conditions. Hunter x Hunter’s mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi has taken long extended breaks since 2006 due to his weak health. Although the announcement of Hunter x Hunter’s return in October 2022 was met with an outpouring of enthusiasm and love from fans, the manga went back on hiatus two months later because of the mangaka’s deteriorating health.
Set in a world where a large majority of the world possesses superpowers called “Quirks,” My Hero Academia follows a young boy named Izuku Midoriya, who was born without powers. Despite being at a severe disadvantage compared to everyone else, Midoriya still dreams of becoming a hero as great as his idol All Might. The opportunity of a lifetime arrives when All Might, recognizing the inherent heroism within Midoriya, passes on his Quirk, One For All, to the young boy. As the story progresses, Midoriya’s ultimate trial as a hero soon reveals itself to be against Shigaraki, the apprentice of All For One, a villain whose Quirk allows him to steal others’ superpowers. And Midoriya realizes that in order to defeat Shigaraki, his only choice might be to save him.
My Hero Academia is available to read on Viz Media, the Shonen Jump app or Manga Plus. During the manga’s break, fans can still get a My Hero Academia fix by watching the currently-airing Season 6 via Crunchyroll.
