The following contains spoilers for My Hero Academia Season 6, now streaming on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Hulu.
“Never forget who you want to become” is one of My Hero Academia’s Shoto Todoroki’s famous quotes, and a blazing trailer shows just how far his journey to be a hero has come.
As showcased in a YouTube video on JUMP COMICS CHANNEL, Todoroki has been through a tremendous amount. From the first time Shoto witnessed All Might’s heroics on TV during his traumatic childhood to the earth-shattering reveal about Dabi’s origins, the trailer goes through several key moments of Todoroki’s life. Fans can catch a glimpse of the first time Todoroki uses the left side of his body, igniting his flames in his fight against Midoriya, casting the video in a blast of brightness and warmth amid otherwise cold imagery. Todoroki’s relationship with his father, the current number one hero Endeavor, has always been strained, but things seemed to take a small turn for the better — until Dabi’s dance in hell.
Shoto Todoroki’s My Hero Academia Arc
The son of the Endeavor, the Flame Hero, Todoroki initially appeared standoffish and kept to himself. He primarily relied on his right side, which generates ice, to fight, despite how it can dangerously lower his body temperature. His refusal to use his left side symbolized him rejecting of his father because of the physical and emotional abuse he endured in his childhood. After his fight with Midoriya, which allowed him to realize that he is not his father and he can become a hero in his own right, Todoroki is able to use both sides and combine the two Quirks into one.
Season 6, which covers the “Paranormal Liberation War” arc, sees the heroes and U.A. students duking it out with the villains from the Paranormal Liberation Front, led by Shigaraki. The war hits the highest point of tension near the end of the first cour. As soon as Dabi sees Endeavor and Todoroki, he reveals to them (and everyone in the hero society) that he is Endeavor’s oldest son, whom everyone thought had died.
Created by Kōhei Horikoshi, My Hero Academia is set in a world of superheroes and villains who possess powers known as Quirks. The story follows Izuku Midoriya, who inherits the Quirk, known as One for All, from the Symbol of Peace All Might. However, the hero society is not as stable as he thinks as the villains look for an opportunity to topple it. The manga series currently has 36 tankōbon volumes as of October 2022.
As displayed in the trailer, Volume 36 showcases a gorgeous cover highlighting the emotional confrontation between the Todoroki brothers. Given the pained expression on his face, Shoto tries his best to fight his brother, but he’s clearly overwhelmed. This is evident by how his orange flames seem to get swallowed up by the sibling’s flames. Moreover, Dabi — with his hair dye washed out leaving behind white — looks monstrous as he bares his teeth in a cruel mocking laugh.
My Hero Academia’s second cour began streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu on Jan. 7.
