My Hero Academia Creator Gives His Characters a Hilarious Mirko New Year Makeover

The UA students from My Hero Academia are hopping into the new year in style.

Kōhei Horikoshi, the mangaka of the popular superhero series My Hero Academia, posted an illustration with Deku, Uraraka, Jiro, Todoroki, Kirishima, Bakugo and Mirko ringing in the new year — but with a twist. According to a translation by ☆オードリーAudrey☆ (aitaikimochi), Horikoshi wrote, “There is a rabbit themed character in the series, and since this year is the Year of the Rabbit, I thought to draw various characters having fun cosplaying as Mirko. The haori and furisode sleeves were pretty difficult to draw, so it ended up looking like this, my bad. Happy New Year!!!”

Year of the Rabbit Hero

Since 2023 is the Year of the Rabbit, everyone except for Bakugo and Mirko decided to dress up as the Rabbit Hero, meaning everyone is wearing Mirko’s sleeveless white leotard, thigh-high boots and, for the final touch, a rabbit cotton tail and rabbit ears headband. Dressed in a gorgeous white kimono with gold detailing and wearing gloves with rabbit ears at the hem, Mirko has a rather disgruntled expression on her face due to her clothes not allowing her to move that much. Uraraka is floating happily while eating her mochi, while Jiro looks slightly embarrassed even though she joined in the cosplay because of Uraraka. On the other hand, Deku is delightedly and confidently posing with both hands raised in a fist and a wink on his face. If anyone’s wondering how Deku can wear the leotard in that position and still be PG-rated, Horikoshi helpfully supplied, “Deku’s balls feel like they’re going to stick out. But he already got used to this camera angle.”

That’s unfortunately not the case for poor Kirishima, who’s excitedly leaping into the air with an impressive split. According to the translation, Horikoshi wrote, “Kirishima’s balls were showing so they had to Photoshop it out.” Meanwhile, Todoroki is hilariously standing stock-still with his usual blank expression. Fans and other characters from My Hero Academia take note; apparently, “Todoroki-kun will do anything if you ask him.” The only outlier is Bakugo who, sadly, “did not get the memo.”

My Hero Academia is one of the most popular manga series ever, with over 65 million copies in circulation and spawning not only a hugely successful anime series but also a light novel series, three anime films, three video games, four stage plays, a trading card game and several collaborations with different companies including Sanrio and Fortnite. The series is also inspiring a live-action adaptation with Legendary Entertainment producing.

Season 6 of My Hero Academia will return on Jan. 7, 2023 with Episode 14.
