My Hero Academia Takes an Unplanned Hiatus From Shonen Jump

The My Hero Academia manga will unexpectedly go on a one-week break.

According to Shonen Jump News, Kōhei Horikoshi’s highly popular manga My Hero Academia will go on a sudden break. This is the third time in four months that My Hero Academia has announced a pause in the updating schedule. While the tweet cited “production reasons,” many fans have guessed it is more than likely that Hōrikoshi’s poor health played a role in the recent hiatus. Chapter 385 will release on April 16.

MHA Fans Are Concerned About Khei Horikoshi’s Health

Fans have expressed concern about the mangaka’s health in response to the announcement. “I think Horikoshi needs to take at least a month off,” one commenter said. Another advocated for more rest for Horikoshi, writing, “It breaks my heart to see that he needs to take a sudden break every month or so.” Horikoshi took his first two-week break in February 2023, followed by a second two-week break a month later due to health concerns. He apologized for the interruptions, saying, “My schedule is a jumble. I’m resuming my normal routine.”

Manga Fans Demand Renewal of Shnen Jump

Fans have expressed concern since his second break in March, calling for a “reformation” of Shnen Jump, the manga’s serialization platform, which has a history of overworking and exhausting its creators. Yoshihiro Togashi, the creator of Hunter x Hunter, was forced to reschedule the series after its recent return due to a debilitating health condition. Although this work culture is typical of Japan as a whole, with employees working up to 40 hours per week, the manga and anime industries have come under increasing scrutiny. MAPPA has been the target of such criticism, with many animators complaining about low pay and long hours, particularly as the studio grows in prominence and takes on more projects.

Massive Success for My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia, one of the most popular manga series of all time, began serialization in July 2014, with numerous manga volumes reaching the New York Times Bestseller List. A successful anime franchise, video games, stage plays, and a live-action adaptation have all been inspired by the series. The story follows Izuku Midoriya, who inherits a powerful Quirk called One for All from his idol All Might and must battle a formidable villain named All for One who seeks to steal his Quirk. Horikoshi hinted at the series’ end when he said My Hero Academia’s eighth popularity poll might be the last.

On April 16, My Hero Academia Chapter 385 will be released.
