It looks like Lisa will transform into Lisa Yagami and use the Death Note to become “the god of a new world” in the upcoming The Simpsons “Treehouse of Horror” parody.

A clip posted by DiscussingFilm on Twitter showcases Lisa Simpson as Light Yagami, the protagonist of Death Note, crossing the street. It appears that the annual Halloween parody episode will take on an environmental justice approach. Just before Lisa crosses the street, a truck advertising veal with the words “The Caged Cutlet: Extra-Cute Veal” passes her, puffing out exhaust fumes. Looking around at the surrounding billboards including one about baby seal perfume, Lisa cynically thinks, “The human race is 20 cow fries away from total extinction. And we deserve it.” Lo and behold, a black notebook falls from the sky and lands in front of her: the Death Tome, a play on Death Note.

The Simpsons’ Death Note Spoof

Of course, the parody adds the signature Simpsons humor. In the Death Tome, there are a few rules, with the first being, “Any person whose name is written in this DEATH TOME will meet their death…and be DEAD.” Just in case the first part of the rule wasn’t clear. In the excerpt, Lisa writes it off as a prank at first, but some additional images of the parody reveal that Lisa may soon believe in the power of the Death Tome as it appears as though Bart will parody the Shinigami Ryuk.

Many fans complimented how clean and well-animated the sneak peek looks, and it may be because the South Korean animation studio DR Movie animated the parody. The studio has been in an exclusive partnership with Madhouse, who produced the original anime series Death Note, since 1991 and helped with background art and cleaning up animation for the series. DR Movie was also in charge of animating 19 episodes of Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a genius named Light Yagami, who discovers the Death Note, a notebook that gives him the ability to kill anyone as long as he writes their name in the notebook. In his quest to create a world devoid of crime, Light takes on the persona of Kira and catches the attention of the mysterious detective L, who will do absolutely everything to catch Kira/Light. Death Note received an anime adaptation in 2006 and has been regarded as an impressively animated series that poses thought-provoking questions about justice.

The “Treehouse of Horror” is the title of the annual Halloween episodes The Simpsons started airing since 1990. Some famous parodies include Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven, Twilight, Paranormal Activity and Parasite. Aside from spoofing Death Note, the episode will also feature a parody of the 2014 psychological horror The Babadook and the sci-fi dystopian TV series Westworld.

The Simpsons “Treehouse of Horror XXXIII” will premiere on Oct. 30 on Fox.
