The worlds of Dragon Ball and League of Legends collide in new crossover fan art.
The images were uploaded on Twitter by League of Legends concept artist Hicham Habchi. They depict Gohan, Trunks, Bulma and Androids 17 and 18 from the alternate dystopian timeline in Dragon Ball Z. While the drawings can easily be identified the characters from the iconic anime and feature (for the most part) their canonical outfits, the images have a clear League of Legends aesthetic. Trunks, in particular, resembles the champion, Darius, with his iconic lavender hair swapped out for a shorter, spikier black style.
Mangaka Akira Toriyama began publishing his iconic Dragon Ball series in 1984. The story follows protagonist Son Goku as he seeks to battle the strongest opponents and often finds himself fighting dangerous but wacky villains. The two anime adaptations by Toei Animation — Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z — originally aired from 1986 to 1996. Since then, the mega-franchise has spawned multiple spinoff anime and manga, many tie-in movies and a wealth of collectibles and toys, musical soundtracks, video games and theme park attractions.
Dragon Ball and League of Legends Inspires Fan Content
Moreover, Dragon Ball continues to be a popular inspiration for fan-made content, as Habchi’s mash-up artwork illustrates. Other recent examples include a spectacle-filled fan animation that sees Goku throw down with none other than Saitama from One-Punch Man and another crossover piece that depicts Goku alongside Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece and the titular ninja from Naruto in the Ukiyo-e art style.
League of Legends is a free-to-play online multiplayer battle area video game from Riot Games. Working in teams of five, players control unique champions and attempt to invade the other side’s base in order to destroy their Nexus. Like Dragon Ball, League of Legends serves as inspiration for creative fans, particularly cosplayers. Notably, Michi Kyunn brought the Sheriff of Piltover Caitlyn to life recently and BloodyEmpress fabricated a stunning and deadly Star Guardian Xayah costume.
Both franchises have more to be excited about than just impressive instances of fan-made content. In terms of Dragon Ball, the Dragon Ball Super manga will return from hiatus next month with a story arc that focuses on Goten and Trunks. Regarding League of Legends, Netflix and Fortiche have confirmed a second season of Arcane, the game’s tie-in animated series, which will premiere sometime post-2022.
League of Legends is available to play on PC and macOS, and Toriyama’s Dragon Ball manga is distributed in English by VIZ Media.
