Gintama Is a Best-selling Manga Series

Gintama is a Shōnen Jump manga created by Sorachi Hideaki, which ran from 2003 to 2019. The manga completed its run on the Gin Tama app, and its chapters received consolidation into 77 tankōbon volumes. Gintama’s story takes place in Edo, known in the present day as Tokyo. Told from the perspective of the samurai Gintoki Sakata, who works as a freelance alongside his friends, readers find that aliens named Amanto have taken over Edo. Sakata and his group of friends work together at the “Yorozuya” (“We Do Everything”) store, where they freelance, doing nearly everything to pay their bills in a world where aliens run the shogunate.

Sunrise/Bandai Namco produced its anime adaptation in 2006. The series also received a live-action adaptation in 2017, as well as light novels, video games and OSTs. Sorachi ended up creating Gintama at the suggestion of his editor, who encouraged him to write a series based on the Shinsengumi. However, he could not create a serious manga about the group and ended up reimagining a historical Japanese story with science fiction elements resulting in the creation of the comedy-drama manga Gintama. The manga is a hit, having sold over 55 million copies, making it one of the best-selling manga series.

The Gintama movie The Very Final debuted in North American theaters for a limited theatrical run on Nov. 21 and 22, 2021. The film premiered with both an English dub and the original subbed Japanese. The conclusion to the hit anime, known for its fake endings, dethroned Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba: The Movie: Mugen Train from its then record-breaking 12-week streak at the Japanese box office. Because Gintama is known for faking fans out, the film’s official synopsis needed to include the text, “This is the actual ending.”

Both Gintama sleeping bags are made-to-order, with shipping believed to begin around March 24, 2023. Reservations open on Dec. 14 through Animate and Movic.
