Jujutsu Kaisen Theory: Is Itadori’s Life as a Sorcerer Really a Coincidence?

The following contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 143, “One More Time” onwards, by Gege Akutami, available in English via Viz Media.

Yuji Itadori’s involvement in Jujutsu sorcery has long been believed to be one big coincidence. He met Megumi Fushiguro by chance on a search for a cursed object, and the sorcerer saved his life. Feeling everyone who can be saved should be, Itadori returned the favor by consuming Sukuna’s finger to gain the strength to protect Fushiguro from a large curse.

This has all seems like an unrelated chain of events since the beginning of Jujutsu Kaisen, but the more that is revealed about Itadori, the less viable that idea becomes. In Chapter 143, “One More Time,” the young sorcerer’s mother is introduced with signature stitches across her forehead. This made way for fan theories to suggest that one powerful cursed energy user may have orchestrated Itadori’s entire life, somehow making sure he became Sukuna’s vessel.

Who Is Kenjaku in Jujutsu Kaisen?

Kenjaku is an ancient sorcerer who aims to evolve humanity via cursed energy, introducing an age of Jujutsu that mirrors the Heian Era. His cursed technique allows him to transplant his brain into different bodies, inhabiting them, assuming their identities and living their lives. His victims are all characterized by stitches and a scar across their foreheads, given after the brain transplant.

One of Kenjaku’s most notable victims was Noritoshi Kamo, who when possessed became labeled as history’s most evil sorcerer and a stain on the Kamo family name. While assuming Noritoshi’s identity, the curse user conducted research that resulted in the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings, nine special-grade cursed objects created with the blood of both a cursed spirit and a human. In addition to this, Kenjaku inhabited Itadori’s mother to birth more human-curse hybrids and is currently possessing the body of the deceased Suguru Geto, who he chose for his powerful cursed spirit manipulation technique.

Yuji Itadori Is Sukuna’s Perfect Vessel

Right off the bat, it was always suspicious how well Itadori controlled a curse as strong as Sukuna. Jujutsu Kaisen’s protagonist was a 15-year-old student with absolutely no prior knowledge of Jujutsu sorcerers, cursed energy or cursed spirits, yet somehow managed to suppress the King of Curses in seconds. However, with the knowledge that Itadori may be a half-curse/half-human hybrid with Kenjaku as his parent, his innate ability to withstand being Sukuna’s vessel is far less surprising.

Precise details about Itadori’s parents and family remain withheld for now. However, it’s known that Itadori is incredibly strong, as Sukuna’s vessel must be capable enough to withstand his cursed technique and cursed energy. That said, it’s undeniably suspicious that the perfect vessel has had his life meddled with by Kenjaku — and just so happened to be the one to consume Sukuna’s power.

Kenjaku May Have Planned Itadori’s Entire Sorcerer Life in Jujutsu Kaisen

Kenjaku is willing to turn the entire Jujutsu world upside down to see his dream society come to fruition. Known to be ancient and wise, he has already created the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings as part of an unknown experiment, so why would he not pursue even more far-fetched goals? Jujutsu Kaisen manga readers are already aware Kenjaku played some role in Itadori’s birth, so it’s not obscene to suggest the boy is another pawn in the sorcerer’s game.

Of course, Itadori made the conscious choice to eat Sukuna’s finger in order to gain power and save Fushiguro, but it would not be surprising if Kenjaku had forced Itadori into that situation. He could have somehow orchestrated the entire scenario, placing Itadori in the right place at the right time from the shadows and ensuring the vessel he crafted became the host for Sukuna. This would all play into Kenjaku’s plan as Sukuna could regain all his power, take over Itadori’s body, and help the ancient sorcerer restore his idea of the golden age of Jujutsu.

The main antagonists in Jujutsu Kaisen consistently have solid, well-thought-out plans and are able to execute them almost flawlessly. While protagonists such as Gojo Satoru may have the power to stop or foil their plans, even the strongest was unable to predict the devastation that unfolded in the “Shibuya” and “Culling Game” arcs — both traumatic events unknowingly orchestrated by Kenjaku.
