Jujutsu Kaisen will recast the role of Suguru Geto following the voice actor’s 10-year extramarital affair.
According to a post by senpaisauces, Takahiro Sakurai, who previously portrayed Geto in the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen and the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, had been left out from the VA Cast of Upcoming Anime for 2023, making it more than likely another voice actor will replace him. The account hypothesized the voice actor update might “be informed in the next [Jujutsu Kaisen] Season-2 announcement.” Previously, Sakurai pulled out of his Jump Festa 2023 appearance, leaving Junya Enoki, Nobunaga Shimazaki and Yuuichi Nakamura to attend.
Fans Disagree With Recasting Suguru Geto
The announcement has left a large majority of fans feeling frustrated, with one calling the decision “petty.” One commented, “What’s cheating gotta do with voicing a character,” and another questioned, “Cheating is wrong, but why should it [affect] his [career?], thats his own personal life and it isnt considered a crime.” In Japan, getting caught in extramarital affairs is equivalent to being charged with a crime. The Japanese word for adultery literally translates to “immoral.” It wasn’t until 1947 that Japan sent women who committed adultery to jail; this law did not apply to men. Sakurai isn’t the first voice actor to see his professional career affected; Masaya Fukunishi replaced Tatsuhisa Suzuki as Draken in Tokyo Revengers after details of his extramarital affair with a 20-year-old fan surfaced.
The Weekly Bunshun newspaper published Sakurai’s 10-year extramarital affair with a staff writer for his radio show “P.S. Genki Desu. Takahiro” on Oct. 26, 2022. Sakurai previously confirmed his marital status of over 20 years to a former voice actor in an interview. After explaining the details of his affair and apologizing to all those involved, his radio show abruptly ended. Upon hearing this, the staff writer, who did not know Sakurai was already married, suffered a shock so great she needed emergency care. She retired from the writing business shortly after.
Written and illustrated by Gege Akutami, Jujutsu Kaisen has over 70 million copies as of August 2022. The series follows high school student Yuji Itadori who enrolls into the Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School after he swallows the rotten finger of one of the most dangerous Curses in the world, Sukuna. Unfortunately for Yuji, there’s a time limit to his life on Earth. As the sorcerers cannot have Sukuna exist in the world again, they must exorcise him and Yuji as soon as possible. Satoru Gojo, a teacher and former friend of Geto, manages to suspend Yuji’s death sentence until he has tracked down and swallowed all of Sukuna’s fingers. Only then will the sorcerers exorcise Sukuna and Yuji. MAPPA produced the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen in October 2020 and a second season will air sometime in 2023 for two consecutive cours. A prequel film called Jujutsu Kaisen 0 aired in 2021 and earned more than 13 billion yen during its box office run. Jujutsu Kaisen and Jujutsu Kaisen 0 are both available to stream on Crunchyroll.
As of this article’s publication, there is no official announcement from Jujutsu Kaisen on if and who the replacement for Geto will be.
