The following article contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 65, “Hidden Inventory” onwards by Gege Akutami, John Werry, and Snir Aharon, available in English from Viz Media.
Gojo Satoru and Geto Suguru have a lengthy and difficult history in Jujutsu Kaisen. Previously ‘the strongest’ together, the pair were once inseparable friends, taking on missions together and challenging each other over petty disagreements. However, after a tragic incident involving Riko Amani — the Star Plasma Vessel the pair attempted to save from Master Tengen’s sacrificial merging ritual — Geto spiraled down a path of dark Jujutsu while Gojo disappeared to improve his strength.
The strongest duo began to drift apart, but Geto remained hopeful about the Jujutsu society and the change that could come — up until the death of his underclassman Haibara Yu. After Haibara’s untimely passing, Geto failed to see any good in the world and abandoned his position at Jujutsu High, as well as his friends there. He began a cult that directly opposed the views of Gojo, and from there the pair rarely crossed paths.
How Geto Suguru’s Betrayal Affected Gojo and Others
Following Geto’s estrangement, everyone who had been constant in Gojo’s life began to disappear or change in their own ways. Haibara’s death also heavily affected Nanami Kento. The two had met as first-years and were close acquaintances through their short time at Jujutsu High. Like Geto and Gojo, Nanami and Haibara went on missions together and their opposing personalities complemented each other. So, after the sorcerer died on a mission with Nanami, the latter gave up on sorcery altogether and left Jujutsu High to work as a salaryman.
Shoko Ieiri, a classmate of Gojo and Geto’s, was as carefree as the duo in her youth. She enjoyed poking fun at them and didn’t take many situations very seriously, stealing Gojo’s sunglasses when he got in trouble with the principal and referring to the strongest duo as “trash.” However, after Geto left Jujutsu High, she threw herself into her medical studies. Shoko was never a combat sorcerer, but her ability to use a reverse cursed technique makes her invaluable. No longer the carefree student she once was, she took to studying and now possesses all the knowledge of a traditional doctor while being able to heal and regenerate any ailment.
As a result of all this, everything in Gojo’s life flipped in a short amount of time. His days of reckless youth alongside his classmates were gone, and he had to change himself to cope. He became the strongest alone and took the mindset that being a powerful sorcerer means shedding emotional ties to others.
How Utahime Helped Ground Gojo After He Lost Geto
Utahime Iori and Gojo have an interesting dynamic throughout Jujutsu Kaisen. She is a very level-headed person, but he always knows how to push her buttons and annoy her just the right way. For example, when the Tokyo High mentor suggests his Kyoto High counterpart couldn’t be the traitor because she’s too weak, Utahime throws her tea over Gojo in defiance of the statement.
Their unusual bond has always existed; even in his past, Gojo was constantly poking and pestering Utahime. However, while the annoying interactions may drive Utahime up the wall, they are likely the only constant Gojo had in his life after Geto went rogue. So, even as Gojo moved past this incredible change in his life and began teaching the new generation, the one thing that didn’t change was his strange relationship with Utahime. He still riles her up, and she will always shoot back at him with the same vengeance.
The moment Geto Suguru was gone, the world changed drastically. Even as Gojo tried to cling to his sanity and the little things he didn’t cherish before, more and more people left his life. Utahime, however, stayed as she was — and Gojo takes advantage of their shared moments of childishness whenever they are together.
