The following article contains spoilers for Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 201, “Direct Talks, Part 2”, by Gege Akutami, John Werry and Snir Aharon, available in English from Viz Media.
The previous chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen revealed a flashback to a few months prior to the beginning of the main story. In the flashback, Kenjaku is having a meeting with members of the U.S. government, including their president. Kenjaku educated them about Cursed Energy and Jujutsu sorcerers, while providing evidence of the existence of both. Cyrus, the Secretary for the U.S. Office of Energy and Environment, sees Cursed Energy as a resource that the U.S. should seize in order to not fall behind other nations.
In order to do this, Cyrus wants the president to authorize the abductions of Jujutsu sorcerers for research and experimentation. The president is outraged by this, but Cyrus is not deterred. He goes on to explain that one sorcerer could produce enough energy to last a whole lifetime and that sorcerers defy modern science and technology. Additionally, he mentions that Russia and China, among many other countries, can’t be allowed to get ahead in alternative energy.
How Kenjaku Managed To Take Advantage of the U.S. Government
Cyrus argues that these countries are going to target Japanese citizens, and they won’t limit themselves to sorcerers. He twists his argument to make it seem as though the other countries are ones who will be abducting and harming the Japanese citizen, while the U.S. would be moving to protect them. It is clear he’s trying to manipulate the president, and Kenjaku aids him by agreeing, saying that it would only be humane. Another U.S. government official informs the president that Kenjaku, who they believe is actually Suguru Geto, could go elsewhere if they refuse. They eventually succeed in persuading the president.
Interestingly, Kenjaku has already met with the government of at least one other nation, China. However, he doesn’t tell the Americans about this. He instead lets them believe they are his first option. It’s not known what the result of the meeting with China was. It’s possible they rejected him, and that’s why he went to the U.S. After all, having the military from both nations invade seems like overkill, especially since he only requests a battalion of at least 800 soldiers.
Lieutenant General Garry K. Johnson, the Joint Special Operations Commander of the U.S. military, believes that 800 soldiers would be unnecessary. He thinks five dozen soldiers should be enough. Uraume then suggests that they test this theory, and Kenjaku agrees. Kenjaku uses Geto’s Cursed Technique to swiftly defeat the forty-five soldiers outside the president’s office, which shocks Garry.
The chapter ends with Kenjaku suggesting they start discussing the actual hunt for sorcerers, after proving his point. Back in the present, Yuji’s group have left their hotel room to check what’s happening in their colony. Chapter 200 showed that at least 800 people have suddenly entered the Tokyo colony, and they have no idea what this could mean. This will likely be the U.S. military’s invasion starting, which means the hunt for Jujutsu sorcerers is about to commence.
