The following contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 2 of Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun, “Master Bachiko,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun is a colorful isekai anime returning for Season 3 in the Fall 2022 lineup, and this time around, protagonist Iruma Suzuki and his classmates are being pushed like never before. Babyls isn’t daycare for young demons; this is the isekai version of UA, a tough, elite school where students must strive for greatness or be left in the dust.

Season 3, Episode 2 delivers on the previous episode’s promises, depicting the students of the abnormal class going through the wringer as their teachers brutally coach them to become even stronger. Iruma, for his part, is about to learn a devastating new technique from his tsundere teacher Bachiko, a move that no other demon could master. This is exactly the kind of glow-up Iruma needed.

Iruma’s Teacher Bachiko Unveils a Powerful New Technique: Hundred Bullseyes

Bachiko initially sees fit to use Iruma and Lead as her personal errand boys and maids, which drives Lead to get training from the obnoxious Robin instead. This leaves Iruma alone with Bachiko, but as a true protagonist, he shows some serious grit and commitment until Bachiko, perhaps inspired by Lord Sullivan’s kind words, decides to start the real training.

Iruma’s patience pays off when Bachiko demonstrates the use of her family’s bloodline trait: Hundred Bullseyes. With it, Bachiko can conjure an oversized bow and arrow made of pure demonic energy, and can obliterate any target with 100 arrows that always hit the mark. Bachiko’s prowess has since earned her the nickname The Winged Devourer of Despair, Undead Archer Barbatos Bachiko. There is a catch, however: practically no one in the Netherworld can learn this ability.

The usage of Hundred Bullseyes requires a great deal of training first, and by nature, no demon has the patience, discipline or commitment necessary to master it. A brief flashback shows Bachiko has tried training students before but it has never worked out, and that put her in a bad mood. But this time may be different; Bachiko can tell Iruma is no ordinary student, and if he cannot use his own bloodline ability, perhaps he can learn to master Hundred Bullseyes and get the edge on his more talented demon classmates. To that end, Bachiko brings him to the Magical Apparatus Battler, where Iruma may get his own weapon as the first step toward learning Hundred Bullseyes. Episode 2 ends on that note, promising to totally reinvent Iruma’s fighting style — if he’s ready.

Iruma’s Lack of Immediate Power Sets Him Apart From Other Isekai Leads

Welcome to Demon School! Season 3, Episode 2 Showcases Iruma's Deadliest Weapon Yet_1

Episode 2 of Welcome to Demon School!’s third season helps remind fans that Iruma is an unusual student at Babyls for several reasons, not just his secret human status. Mentally, he is a whole different species than his classmates like Asmodeus Alice or Andro Jazz, since Iruma has grit, optimism and patience that comes from the human spirit. The demon students are capable of pride, joy, wrath and aggression, but those traits don’t make for good archers, nor are they suitable for long-term training. This is especially clear with reckless students like Sabnock Sabro, who greedily seizes any power he can find without hesitation. Being human gives Iruma an edge, even if he lacks demonic powers to back it up.

This also sets Iruma apart from notoriously OP isekai heroes like Reincarnated as a Slime’s Rimuru Tempest or Black Summoner’s Kelvin, who simply have whatever powers or allies they need right from the start. Despite Iruma being an isekai protagonist, he functions more like a classic shonen hero as he knows there are no shortcuts to learning a new technique or becoming a great hero.

Iruma’s grit has gotten him this far in Welcome to Demon School!; now, as Season 3, Episode 2 shows, he must push himself to new heights with his human-style tenacity and learn a devastating technique that no other Babyls student could master. Just in time for the Harvest Festival, too.
