A new trailer from Jump Comics reunited two of Hunter x Hunter’s fan-favorite voice actors.
Posted to Jump’s official YouTube channel, the promotional video features the voice work of Daisuke Namikawa and Mamoru Miyano, reprising their roles as Hisoka and Chrollo from Hunter x Hunter’s 2011 anime adaption. The two exchange lines from Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga, promoting its 37th volume, which catalogs its return to Weekly Shonen Jump after a four-year hiatus. The trailer also advertises the manga artist’s PUZZLE exhibition, which has run at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Tokyo since October 2022, displaying drawings and manuscripts from a legendary body of work featuring series like Hunter x Hunter and Yu-Yu Hakusho.
While Hunter x Hunter resumed for two months in 2022, it is currently on hiatus again due to Togashi’s ongoing health struggles. The manga artist suffers from a chronic back problem that has resulted in several extended pauses to the series, including a two-year break from 2014 to 2016 followed shortly after by another until 2018. This current hiatus differs from those in the past, as Togashi announced that he has resumed drawing the series, but that he and publisher Shonen Jump have decided against the format of weekly serialization, which has become an unfeasible schedule given his current state.
A recent tweet from Togashi further illuminated the extent of his condition’s effect during the production process. In addition to bringing on more staff to assist him, the creator has taken to drawing panels lying down as his hip and back problems are severe enough to prevent him from sitting in a chair. As a result, much of the ongoing PUZZLE exhibition in Tokyo is comprised of past works collected to celebrate the 35th anniversary of his debut as a manga artist, which began with 1986’s comedic one-shot Sensēha Toshishita!!
Of all the works in Togashi’s long career, Hunter x Hunter is arguably the most renowned, with its off and on run in Weekly Shonen Jump beginning all the way back in 1998. The series follows pre-teen protagonist Gon Freecss, who leaves his island home to search for his absentee father and follow in his footsteps by becoming a Hunter. Since its debut, Gon’s story has received two separate anime adaptations in 1999 and 2011, as well as two feature films and even a musical adaptation performed in 2000.
Volume 37 of the manga does not yet have an English language release date, but previous volumes are available from Viz Media. The 2011 anime is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
