Housing Complex C: All the Gods and Myths, Explained

The following contains spoilers for all four episodes of Housing Complex C, which aired on Adult Swim, as well as brief discussion of suicide.

One of the most interesting aspects of Housing Complex C is just how cryptic the story is. Admittedly, it tries to pack in way too much into four episodes, leaving many plot holes regarding the mystery behind the Japanese region of Kurosaki.

Fans just don’t get closure regarding the entity haunting the apartment complex there, or why this being has been playing this game and harming innocents along the way. With that in mind, let’s break down the mythologies, gods and eventually, the war that has influenced the being to warp the very essence of the place.

Kuzululu Has a Deadly Cult

Housing Complex C features fables regarding Kuzululu, a sea god that nods to Cthulhu. This being had a bunch of followers, who often became violent. It’s why they turned Kurosaki into a blasphemous land — something Taka discovers in a room linked to an ancient cave. In the past, they left animal sacrifices from the land and sea, hoping to revive their god after it was said that Kuzululu’s spirit departed the planet.

Taka posits it may have died, pushing the humans to then sacrifice each other to resurrect the corpse. As their bloodlust, desperation and obsession grew, they seemed to kill other tribes. It’s hinted they wiped out the rest of the region, all to garner more offerings when they discovered another god existed: a sky god, whom they felt could bring their aquatic deity back. This ties into the anime’s very first scene with young girls being slaughtered, and also, all the dead fishes and humans (aka the katamiwake) left around the building.

Iyoyoloki Soyohosu Is the Ultimate God

Housing Complex C’s sky god is Iyoyoloki Soyohosu, whom Taka calls the most “omnipotent” being as he deciphers the glyphs and inscriptions in the stone room. Kuzululu’s worshipers, though, stained the concept of the entity with their selfish ways. Taka learns the wooden gates around the place — the “kurokado” (black gates) — are all parts of history that got warped. They’re white, after all, so they should be called “shirokado” (white gates) instead.

But he reveals they lost color in time due to all the bloodshed. Iyoyoloki Soyohosu’s essence was that of a rainbow too, so when all these colors combined across the spectrum, they’d form white light — a symbol of hope, inspiration and optimism. So clearly, the cult was dishonoring this notion. Ironically, Taka deciphers everything when he tracks the bottom of a rainbow to a mossy, verdant hill near the complex, confirming this is the true gateway. The entrance then takes him to the room where he becomes enlightened, speaking to Iyoyoloki Soyohosu’s sparkling presence and how it dimmed due to the cult’s heresy.

Kimi Is the Human Vessel of Iyoyoloki Soyohosu

In a diary he leaves behind before taking his life, Taka finally confesses that all their myths, beliefs and songs were twisted due to the cult. It’s all revisionist, which culminates in him piecing clues together to figure out that Kimi is the human vessel for Iyoyoloki Soyohosu. The Koshide family belongs to the cult, ergo why they’re killing people, hoping Iyoyoloki Soyohosu will revive Kuzululu for them. But Taka determines this won’t happen due to Kimi, usually so kind and caring, being the optical illusion.

Everything revolves around her — which is why the corpses she finds are turned to moss. It’s her way of giving these deaths the energy of eternity. It’s cruel, but still a small mercy. Kimi’s merely reacting, after sticking the region in a time loop. They’ve been kept decades behind in the year 2000 while the rest of Japan moved forward, all as a bubble Kimi’s been experimenting with. Ultimately, though, with the cult back and mankind infighting once more, she remembers the past and erases this little pocket of reality, sparing Kan alone as she reboots the place.
