The highly-anticipated Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku anime recently debuted, and fans have quickly become enamored with its visual style, especially in the opening title sequence.
Studio Mappa’s adaptation of the manga written by Yuji Kaku premiered its first episode on April 1, 2023. Fans of the series took to Twitter to express their love of the dark anime’s first episode, praising the animation team and calling specific attention to the opening title sequence, which features the song “Work” by Millennium Parade and Sheena Ringo.
Mappa has faced controversy in the past few years thanks to their tight work schedule and the grueling hours put in by their animators. Multiple tweets addressed the issue, with one calling out the mistreatment by stating, “Mappa may not be seeing their families, but at least Hell’s Paradise looks spectacular.” Plenty more attention was paid to the visuals, with many tweets labeling the series debut with words such as “fire,” “spectacular,” “a banger,” and more.
One Twitter user strayed away from praising the animation style and instead expressed their love for the relationship between the characters of Gabimaru and Yui. The dynamic between this married couple played a significant role in the episode, with this fan calling them “precious.” Their relationship is an essential motivator for the main character and will develop as the series progresses.
The episode’s director, Kaori Makita, has worked on many Mappa titles in the past, such as Terror in Resonance, Yuri!!! On Ice, Kakegurui Twin, and Attack on Titan: The Final Season, giving an experienced eye to the show’s debut. In addition, the voice cast includes notable performers such as Chikahiro Kobayashi (Golden Kamuy, Beastars, Aoashi) and Yumiri Hanamori (Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, Call of the Night, Mieruko-Chan)
Hell’s Paradise — often placed alongside Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen as the “Dark Trio of Shonen” — tells the story of a shinobi named Gabimaru. This powerful warrior is sentenced to death after being betrayed by his peers but is unable to die and survives multiple execution attempts. Soon, an expert executioner known as Yamada Asaemon Sagiri gifts him the opportunity to earn his freedom by coming with her to search for the elixir of life on a legendary yet dangerous island known as Shinsenkyo.
The first episode is available to watch on Crunchyroll, with the next set to premiere on April 8. The manga will also receive a one-shot chapter on the same date, created by the original author.
