The following contains spoilers for Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury Season 2 Episode 5, “Precious Things,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.

Suletta Mercury has been put in a bad spot in the latest episode of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. She’s lost a duel and, with it, her fiancé Miorine Rembram and her precious Gundam Aerial. All of this was set up by Miorine to get her away from the Gundam and her manipulative mother Prospera. Further compounding the dramatic irony is the fact that Miorine genuinely believes she’s doing the right thing.

While her heart may be in the right place, she hasn’t chosen the best course of action for this particular situation. Perhaps most tragically is how what she’s done for Suletta’s sake will only make things worse for everyone in the end.

What Did Miorine’s Betrayal Accomplish?

Miorine believes sabotaging Suletta’s duel was the only thing to get her away from her mother. Prospera manipulated her daughter so completely that, if asked her to kill or give up on her life’s dreams, she would obediently comply; Miorine confirmed this when she tried talking to her about it. As cruel as it might have been to go behind Suletta’s back, it appears that there was no way simply talking to her would get across how toxic the relationship with her mother had become.

Unfortunately, there are a few major flaws with Miorine’s line of thinking. Firstly, she doesn’t seem to fully understand the familial connection Suletta has with the Aerial — to Suletta, the Mobile Suit is more than just a machine. If she loses that bond, there is a strong possibility that she will spiral will into inconsolable feelings of grief and isolation.

To make matters worse, Prospera was likely counting on something like this to happen. Now that Suletta has been betrayed by the person she trusts most (next to her mother), it will force her to become even more reliant on Prospera, therefore opening her up to further manipulation. She might even willingly become a part of Prospera’s ethically questionable Quiet Zero project.

On top of all this, Miorine will be creating conflict with the Earth House. They may all work for GUND-ARM, Inc., but they’re also sentimental kids who see Suletta as a friend — much more than they see Miorine as a boss. Whenever this conflict reaches an inevitable confrontation, it certainly won’t be pretty.

Even if Miorine realizes her mistake and tries to explain things, Suletta no longer has any reason to trust her. In trying to get her away from Prospera, she’s ultimately driven a wedge between herself and Suletta. Prospera now has everyone exactly where she wants them, and it’s all because Miorine thought this was the only way to help.
