A talented Fullmetal Alchemist fan perfectly recreated one of the homunculus’s transformative powers.
Posted on Reddit by Purple Toast, the Envy cosplay perfectly captures the moment the Fullmetal Alchemist antagonist transitions from impersonating Maria Ross to his natural form; early on in the story, the homunculus dons the Second Lieutenant’s form as a disguise in order to assassinate Maes Hughes, as the Lieutenant Colonel had gotten close to figuring out Father’s plan.
Some of Envy’s siblings have also helped inspire some impressive instances of costume-making, especially fan favorite Lust. Dhalia Cosplay recently showed off their incredibly accurate version of the feminine homunculus. The stunning outfit includes the character’s signature tight black dress, long and curly hair and iconic red ouroboros tattoo. Meanwhile, another fan posted their Lust cosplay that features her Ultimate Spear.
Of course, Fullmetal Alchemist’s bad guys aren’t the only characters from the classic series that have ignited the imaginations and creative inclinations of fans. An up-and-coming cosplayer named lizzie!! shared their version of Winry Rockbell, the talented automail engineer for Edward Elric. The costume recreates the skilled mechanics work clothes, including her strapless black top, tan jumpsuit and signature green bandanna.
The Story of Fullmetal Alchemist
Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist manga first appeared in Square Enix’s Monthly Shōnen Gangan, running from July 2001 to June 2010. Told across 27 volumes, the story takes place in a steampunk-esque world where the laws of alchemy govern nature. It follows the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, as they search for the Philosopher’s Stone in hopes of healing their damaged bodies after a failed attempt to use alchemy to bring their dead mother back to life. Envy and Lust are only two of the many villains and challenges that stand in the brothers’ way.
With over 80 million copies in circulation globally, Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the best-selling manga ever along with series like Yoshihiro Togashi’s YuYu Hakusho and Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail. Arakawa’s work also received several prestigious awards during its initial run, including winning the shōnen category at the Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2004 and the Seiun Award for best science fiction comic in 2011.
VIZ Media distributes the Fullmetal Alchemist manga in North America, and both of Studio Bones’ anime adaptations — Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood — are available on Crunchyroll.
