Ufotable, one of the studios that worked on Demon Slayer, revealed a 3D animation clip that helps the series’ animators create its exciting action scenes.

The Twitter user @WaffletimeCat shared the clip, which came from ufotable’s job site, on their page. This clip showcases 3D-animated puppets battling one another, leading into the completed animation of Demon Slayer protagonist Tanjiro Kamado facing off against an enemy. As @WaffletimeCat describes, the guidework animation is designed to “assist the 2D artists with perspective and timing, making a dynamic shot that doesn’t stiffen from 3D models.”

Ufotable’s diligence in helping its animators is evident in the finished product, as the Demon Slayer franchise, (also known by its full title, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba) has gone on to win numerous awards and accolades since its debut. Some highlights include “Animation of the Year” at the Tokyo Anime Awards (2020, television category), a Magnolia Award nomination from the Shanghai International Film Festival (2020), and Crunchyroll’s ‘Anime of the Year’ Award (2020). More recently, the franchise was honored again at the 2022 Crunchyroll anime awards, winning ‘Best Animation,” “Best Score,” and “Best Ending.”

Demon Slayer Has Taken the World By Storm

Based on Koyoharu Gotouge’s manga of the same name, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba was released in 2019, airing from Apr. 6 to Sept. 28 of that year. The series’ success led to a second season, in addition to the film, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train, which debuted in 2020. The anime takes place in a world where demons freely roam, slaughtering and devouring humans. One day, a boy named Tanjiro Kamado finds that the Demon King, Muzan Kibutsuji, has killed his entire family except for his sister, Nezuko, who has been transformed into a demon herself. Encouraged by the fact that some of Nezuko’s humanity still remains, Tanjiro sets forth on a quest to return his sister to normal, while also defending humanity from the same demons that destroyed his life.

Announced immediately after the conclusion of Season 2, Season 3 of Demon Slayer is currently in production. This new season will cover the events of the manga’s “Swordsmith Village” arc, which has Tanjiro travel to a village of swordsmiths to replace his sword. Meanwhile, two upper-rank demons named Gyokku and Hantengu make plans to destroy this village, and Tanjiro decides to defend it with the help of fellow Demon Slayer Genya Shinazugawa, among other new allies. While a release date has not yet been set, it is expected that Season 3 will debut sometime in 2023.

Demon Slayer is available to stream on Hulu and Netflix.
