The Hashira are among of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba‘s most intriguing and mysterious characters. Despite the fact that all nine of the Demon Slayer Corps’ most elite swordsmen have already been presented, with seven of the Hashira making their debut in one fell swoop, the majority of them have not been seen since. With Season 2 over, it’s evident that only one Hashira will be in the spotlight this season, diverting the audience’s attention away from the other heroes who are so important to the Demon Slayer Corps. As a refresher on these ultra-powerful Demon Slayers, let’s revisit each Hashira’s introduction.
Giyu Tomioka: The Water Hashira
Giyu was the first Hashira presented in the series, appearing in the opening episode. Giyu prepares to punish Tanjiro as he would any other demon after rescuing him from the newly turned demon Nezuko. Despite Tanjiro’s pleas, Giyu is first unconcerned about Nezuko being the young man’s sister. Giyu, however, chooses to spare Nezuko’s life in the hopes that Tanjiro may one day cure her after being inspired by Tanjiro’s resolve and battle instincts. He even tells Tanjiro to look for Sakonji Urokodaki, a master swordsman who will teach Tanjiro how to slay demons.
Shinobu Kocho: The Insect Hashira
Shinobu first appears when she is deployed alongside Giyu to fight with the terrible demons who have been slaying Corps personnel during the “Natagumo Mountain” Arc. When Shinobu encounters the demon to whom Lower-Rank Five, Rui, has surrendered his power to play the part of his sister, it is shown that Shinobu is physically incapable of beheading a demon. Her specialised katana, on the other hand, injects demons with lethal venom. Shinobu’s knowledge of poisons and antidotes aids her in preventing Zenitsu from becoming a demon spider as a result of another demon’s poison.
Kyojuro Rengoku: The Flame Hashira
At a meeting convened by Ubuyashiki, the chief of the Demon Slayer Corps, the remaining Hashira are all introduced together. Kyojuro is the first of these new Hashira to stand up, and he promptly declares his intention to punish both Nezuko and Tanjiro for the crimes of being a demon and harbouring a demon. When Ubuyashiki orders that the Kamado siblings be spared, Kyojuro respectfully expresses his strong displeasure with his master’s choice.
Tengen Uzui: The Sound Hashira
Tengen’s initial remarks, in accord with Kyojuro, are that he would be flamboyantly thrilled to flamboyantly execute Tanjiro and Nezuko with maximum flamboyance. Tengen, like Kyojuro, is perplexed by Ubuyashiki’s decision to spare the Kamados. Tengen’s attitude towards Tanjiro appears to change after discovering that Tanjiro has met Kibutsuji, as he no longer demands the young Kamado’s head and instead requests information on the Progenitor of Demons.
Mitsuri Kanroji: The Love Hashira
Mitsuri, the gentlest Hashira introduced thus far, is deeply troubled by the prospect of murdering a youngster as adorable as Tanjiro. Mitsuri, free of her rage against Tanjiro and Nezuko, spends the most of her introduction in awe of her fellow Hashira. When Ubuyashiki appears, Mitsuri laments that she didn’t get the chance to properly meet him, and she resolves to follow whatever decision her master makes on Nezuko and Tanjiro.
Gyomei Himejima: The Stone Hashira
Gyomei, ever the gentle giant, is moved to tears by his compassion for Tanjiro, regretting the brutality of Tanjiro’s birth in the first place. Unlike Kyojuro and Tengen, Gyomei’s desire to execute the Kamado siblings is motivated by immense sorrow rather than anger, as he wishes to put them out of their pain. Gyomei, although proclaiming his deep love and respect for Ubuyashiki, tearsfully reveals that he cannot accept his master’s decision to let Nezuko and Tanjiro live.
Muichiro Tokito: The Mist Hashira
Muichiro, unlike his fellow Hashira, was completely unconcerned by Tanjiro’s harbouring of his demon sister. In fact, saying he couldn’t care less may not be entirely correct, because there’s no sign that he’s even aware of what’s going on. Muichiro, his gaze fixed on the sky, ponders the names of birds and cloud patterns while ignoring the drama unfolding around him. When Ubuyashiki announces that Nezuko and Tanjiro would be spared, Muichiro remarks that he is unconcerned because he will forget about it anyhow.
Iguro Obanai: The Serpent Hashira
From his position lounging in the trees, Iguro’s primary point of concern is that Giyu also violated the code by preventing Shinobu from executing Nezuko during the “Natagumo Mountain” Arc. The snake-wearing Hashira is still no fan of Tanjiro’s, stating that the fact that Nezuko is his sister means that they cannot trust a word he says. Surprisingly, he does not argue against Ubuyashiki’s decision like some of the others, merely saying that he will never trust the Kamado siblings.
Sanemi Shinazugawa: The Wind Hashira
The final Hashira to be introduced, Sanemi arrives late to the meeting with Nezuko’s wooden box in his hands. The most violent Hashira, bordering on sadistic, Sanemi tortures Nezuko by stabbing her through the box, his opinion clear that all demons must die. Sanemi does, however, show a surprisingly civilized side when Ubuyashiki appears, treating his master with the utmost respect. Ironically, as the most violently opposed to allowing Nezuko to live, it is Sanemi’s actions that prove Nezuko undeniably refuses to attack humans, sparing her and Tanjiro’s lives.
