Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Bosses Say There Is No Season 2

Fans of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners hoping for a continuation of the series might be out of luck, as its bosses said they have no intention of continuing the anime.

As reported by VGC, developer CD Projekt Red, who created the game Cyberpunk 2077 on which the anime is based, says it doesn’t have plans for a second season. In an interview with Famitsu and translated by VGC, CD Projekt Red community manager Satoru Honma noted that there are no intentions for more Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, as the team conceived it as a short-form series. However, the company might look at creating more anime in the future.

“I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback,” Honma said. “However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background.’ Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different.”

Netflix’s latest anime became a major success for the streamer, sitting on its top ten global watches for a month after its release. Its level of popularity seemingly caused a massive resurgence in players for Cyberpunk 2077. Shortly after Edgerunners came out, Cyberpunk 2077 beat The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s record for most concurrent players on Steam. The feat garnered significant attention due to Cyberpunk 2077’s infamously rocky release nearly two years prior.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners serves as a love letter to the tabletop RPG and video game that inspired it, exploring elements of the world of the fiction Night City, California. In the games, players can take on the roles of Corporate, Cop, Fixer, Media, Mercenary, Netrunner, Nomad, Rockerboy, Solo (Hitman) and Techie. The anime adds a new role called Edgerunners. Though the show never clearly defines what they are, what aspects it shows indicate that they are something of a cross between Nomads, Netrunners and Mercenaries. In the series, protagonist David Martinez serves as an Edgerunner for a team led by Maine, also an Edgerunner. The series’ conclusion with David’s unclear fate left many fans wondering if the show might continue into a second season.

All ten episodes of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners are now available to watch exclusively on Netflix.
