Anime fans have a treasure trove of Crunchyroll series to watch this winter season in 2023.
Compiled by J-List Blog, more than 30 titles will premiere this January, with one anime airing in late December. Titles include sequels to popular series such as Season 4 of Bungo Stray Dogs and Season 2 of Vinland Saga, as well as new titles that have already generated a fair amount of hype, such as Buddy Daddies, The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague and NieR:Automata Ver1.1a. In order of premiere date, here is the list of anime streaming on Crunchyroll this winter.
Lee’s Detective Agency is a spinoff miniseries of Arknights, an anime based on a tactical RPG/tower defense mobile game developed by Hypergrph. Produced by Gravity Well, Lee’s Detective Agency began streaming on Dec. 23.
A fantasy light novel series written by Shinta Fuji with illustrations by Susumu Kuroi, Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World began serialization in January 2019. The story follows an adventurer named Nick who meets three other adventurers at a tavern after he is unfairly expelled by his mentor Argus. Ningen Fushin: Adventurers Who Don’t Believe in Humanity Will Save the World began streaming on Jan. 3.
Season 4 of Bungo Stray Dogs is finally airing after the third season ended in June 2019. Based on the manga written by Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa, Bungo Stray Dogs revolves around the members of the Armed Detective Agency, who possess supernatural powers. Season 4 introduces a military organization known as the Hunting Dogs who arrest the Agency for acts of terrorism. Bungo Stray Dogs is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
Written and illustrated by Miyuki Tonogaya, The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague is a fantasy romance story set in an alternate world where people are ancestors of ancient spirits. Produced by Zero-G, The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague streamed its first episode on Jan. 4.
Created by Fumita Yanagida, the manga Tomo-chan Is a Girl! began serialization in April 2015 before ending in July 2019. Produced by Lay-duce (Classroom Crisis), Tomo-chan Is a Girl! is a romantic comedy that follows tomboy Tomo Aizawa who struggles to confess to her childhood friend Junichiro Kubota, who sees her as one of the guys.
An adventure fantasy light novel series written by Nana Mikoshiba and illustrated by Riko Korie,The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World follows Ray White who attends the prestigious and snobbish Arnold Academy of Magic. On the outside, he doesn’t appear powerful or special at all, but it turns out Ray is the ancestor of the greatest magicians in the world. The Iceblade Sorcerer Shall Rule the World premieres on Jan. 5.
Onimai: I’m Now Your Sister! is a comedy, slice-of-life manga series written and illustrated by Nekotofu and began serialization in 2017. The story follows an otaku named Mahiro Oyama who becomes the unwitting victim of one of the experiments conducted by his scientist sister Mihari and ends up waking up as a young girl. Produced by Studio Bind (Mushoku Tensei), Onimai: I’m Now Your Sister! begins streaming on Jan. 5.
An original anime series produced by Nitroplus and Shochiku with Gen Urobuchi (Psycho-Pass) as the writer, Revenger follows hitman Raizo Kurima whose job is to help those with no power exact revenge. Revenger streams on Crunchyroll on Jan. 5.
Buddy Daddies, also an original anime, is seeing no shortage of hype. The series follows two assassin best friends who find their hands full with the four-year-old daughter of a mob boss. Animated by P.A. Works and produced by Aniplex and Nitroplus, Buddy Daddies will have the voice talents of Toshiyuki Tyonaga, Koki Uchiyama and Hina Kino for the main trio, and streams on Jan. 6.
Published from March 2010 to February 2015, the fantasy light novel series Sugar Apple Fairy Tale, written by Miri Mikawa with art by aki, follows Anne, who travels to Lewiston to compete in a sugar sculpture festival in the hopes of becoming a Silver Sugar Master, and purchases a fairy named Challe to act as her bodyguard. Sugar Apple Fairy Tale premieres on Jan. 6.
Set in the universe of Trails, the video game franchise by Nihon Falcom, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel — Northern War follows Lavian Winslet, who assembles a group for a secret mission to gather information about a mysterious threat called the Imperial Hero. The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel — Northern War will stream on Crunchyroll on Jan. 6.
Originally serialized via the user-generated novel publishing site Shōsetsuka ni Narō, Kodansha later picked up the light novel series Chillin’ in My 30s After Getting Fired From the Demon King’s Army. Written by Rokujūyon Okazawa and illustrated by Sage Joh, the series streams on Jan. 7.
Don’t Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro is a web manga series created by Nanashi, which started running in Magazine Pocket in November 2017. It follows an introverted high schooler who attracts the attention of a fellow student with a secret crush. The first season premiered in April 2021 with 12 episodes. Season 2, produced by OLM (Odd Taxi and Komi Can’t Communicate) premieres on Jan. 7.
Written by FUNA, the light novel series Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement received a manga adaptation in June 2017. The isekai story follows Mitsuha, who has the ability to travel between the new world and her own and decides to find ways to procure a retirement fund. Adapted by Felix Film, Saving 80,000 Gold in Another World for My Retirement on Jan. 7.
Originally a web novel, The Misfit of Demon King Academy received a manga adaptation with Kayahuraka as the artist, which ended in July 2021 due to the artist’s death. The series follows Anos Voldigoad, a reincarnated demon king who sacrificed himself to preserve peace before the start of the series. Two thousand years later, Anos is determined to set things right and reclaim his throne. Season 2 will premiere as split cour on Jan. 7.
Written by Kiichi Kosuzu and illustrated by Shiso for the first volume and Kihiro Yuzuki for the second volume onwards, The Reincarnation of the Strongest Exorcist in Another World follows diviner Haruyoshi, who succeeds in the secret reincarnation technique after his near-death experience. It premieres on Jan. 7.
Based on the manga series created by Yasuhiro Nightow, Trigun received its first anime adaptation in 1998 for 26 episodes. The second adaptation will have Kenji Mutō as director. The series follows Vash the Stampede who has a bounty of 60 billion “double dollars” on his head after he accidentally destroyed a city with his powers. Produced by Orange (Beastars and Godzilla Singular Point), Trigun Stampede will premiere on Jan. 7.
The isekai fantasy manga series Handyman Saito in Another World began online serialization on the ComicWalker site since October 2018. Handyman Saito’s decidedly useless skills suddenly become quite useful when he finds himself in another world. Animated by C2C with Toshiyuki Kubooka as director, Handyman Saito in Another World will stream on Jan. 8.
After Ryoma Takebayashi dies in his sleep in By the Grace of the Gods, he meets three gods who send him to another world as an 8-year-old child, where he trains himself to tame hundreds of slimes and meets the Jamil family. Season 1, directed by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu, aired in October 2020. Season 2 will have a change in directors with Yuka Yamada helming the second season. By the Grace of the Gods Season 2 airs on Jan. 8.
Originally written by Kyo Shirodaira, In/Spectre follows university student Kurō Sakuragawa who agrees to help the Goddess of Wisdom, but turns out they’ve met before — when she fell in love with him. Produced by Brain’s Base (Golden Kamuy Season 4, To Your Eternity and Hotarubi no Mori e), Season 1 aired from January to March 2020 with 12 episodes. In/Spectre Season 2 premieres on Jan. 8.
Based on the action role-playing game Nier: Automata, developed by PlatinumGames, NieR:Automata Ver1.1a revolves around two humanoid androids called 2B and 9S set in 5012. The android soldiers must fight machines who have taken over the Earth. Yui Ishikawa will voice 2B while Natsuki Hanae will portray 9S. Produced by A-1 Pictures, NieR:Automata Ver1.1a premieres on Jan. 8.
At the end of the 19th century, a lonely orphan girl builds an unexpected bond with a demon who enacts a contract with her, and the two seek out a way to live a peaceful life together. Written and illustrated by Makoto Hoshino, The Tale of Outcasts began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Sunday from August 2019 to April 2021. Directed by Yasutaka Yamamoto with Ashi Productions helming the adaptation, The Tale of Outcasts streams on Jan. 8.
Created by Kentaro Yabuki, Ayakashi Triangle is a romantic comedy manga series that has 12 tankōbon volumes as of January 2023. It follows childhood friends Matsuri Kazamaki and Suzu Kanade who have the ability to see ayakashi, invisible spirits who mostly live people alone but occasionally become a threat. Adapted by Connect, Ayakashi Triangle airs on Jan. 9.
As a member of the Saenome clan, Hyouma’s job is to peacefully send spirits known as tsukumogami back to their own world. However, he has only feelings of hatred towards them. Based on the manga series created by Onigunsou, Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari will receive its anime adaptation by Bandai Namco Pictures on Jan. 9.
Inglis Eucus is the great Hero-King of the Kingdom of Silvare. Due to his one regret at not mastering his sword, a goddess reincarnates him as a woman, so he can dedicate his life to training. Originally a light novel series wirtten by Hayaken and illustrated by Nagu, Reborn to Master the Blade: From Hero-King to Extraordinary Squire received an anime adaptation with Studio Comet set to adapt it, and will premiere on Jan. 9.
Written and illustrated by Makoto Yukimura, Vinland Saga is a historical epic featuring a young hero named Thorfinn who works for Askeladd, so he may grow strong enough to kill said mentor to avenge his father’s death. The manga began serialization in April 2005 in Weekly Shōnen Magazine until October before it took a hiatus from October to December 2005. The manga has over 7 million copies as of August 2022 and won Best General Manga at the Kodansha Manga Award in 2012. Season 1, produced by Wit Studio aired in July 2019 with MAPPA taking over as the studio for Season 2. The second season of Vinland Saga will air on Jan. 9.
Based on the manga series by Itaru Bonnoki, The Vampire Dies in No Time follows vampire hunter Ronaldo, tasked to kill Romanian-Japanese vampire Draluc. Their relationship changes when Draluc has to move into Ronaldo’s apartment due to his castle suffering destruction, and the two find themselves unofficial partners. The first season, produced by Madhouse (2011 adaptation of Hunter x Hunter and Death Note), aired in October 2021 with 12 episodes. Season 2 will premiere on Jan. 9.
Based on the light novel series written by Ren Eguchi, Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill is a comedy isekai about a seemingly ordinary man who finds himself in a different world that prizes swordplay and sorcery. He finds he has a unique skill which allows him to buy modern goods to cook up a storm. Produced by MAPPA with Kiyoshi Matsuda as the director, Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill streams on Jan. 10.
A light novel series writen by Yuumikan and illustrated by Koin, Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense follows Maple, who plays the VRMMORPG NewWorld Online who puts every status point she earns into leveling up her defense level. Produced by Silver Link, Bofuri: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense Season 2 airs on Jan. 11.
An original new story from manga artist Tsutomu Nihei (Knights of Sidonia), Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is directed by Hiroaki Ando. The series will have Yoshimasa Hosoya and Rie Takahashi voicing the lead characters. Produced by Polygon Pictures, Kaina of the Great Snow Sea streams on Jan. 11.
A fantasy light novel series written by Miku and illustrated by U35, The Fruit of Evolution: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made began serialization in January 2014 before Futabasha acquired it under its Monster Bunko imprint. The story follows a bullying victim who finds himself transported into another world. Season 1, produced by Hotline, aired for 12 episodes. The second season, The Fruit of Evolution 2: Before I Knew It, My Life Had It Made, premieres on Jan. 13.
The Fire Hunter is a fantasy novel series written by Rieko Hinata and illustrated by Akihiro Yamada, about creatures called Flame Demons who can only be defeated by Fire Hunters. Junji Nishimura will direct the adaptation with Signal.MD producing the anime. The Fire Hunter airs on Jan. 14.
Written by Yoshinobu Akita and illustrated by Yuuya Kusaka, the light novel series Sorcerous Stabber Orphen ran from May 1994 to September 2003. The story follows a promising black sorcerer named Orphen whose sister Azalie turns into a dragon due to a spell gone awry. A new remake, produced by Studio Deen, aired in January 2020 with a second season airing from January to March 2021. The third season, Sorcerous Stabber Orphen -Chaos in Urbanrama-, will premiere on Jan. 18.
