Whatever Happened to Code Geass: Z of the Recapture?

Code Geass was an incredibly popular anime of the late 2000s, with its popularity signaling a growing renaissance in anime across the world. Much of this can be attributed to its combination of mecha anime, military fiction and psychological thrills, making the series quite unique. It’s since had a number of new seasons and follow-ups, though one particular continuation has yet to see the light of day.

Code Geass: Z of the Recapture was announced years ago, but it still hasn’t manifested into a real series. News on the supposedly upcoming anime is scant, leading many to question if it was ever going to truly exist. Here’s what fans should know about what’s been revealed so far — and if this lines up with ever actually being able to watch a new chapter in the world of Code Geass.

The Plot and Other Elements of Z of the Recapture are Still Unknown

Whatever Happened to Code Geass: Z of the Recapture?_0

The touted storyline for Z of the Recapture takes place after the events of Code Geass Lelouch of the Re;surrection. That movie was itself the sequel to a compilation film that retold the events of the show, effectively creating an alternate timeline. This continuity placement is about the only thing known about Code Geass: Z of the Recapture, as further details have yet to be revealed. Fan theories include Lelouch and C.C. traveling to stop evil Geass users, somewhat inverting the premise of the series so far. Another possibility is that the show will be less of a third season to the previous episodes and more of a true spinoff that focuses on a new protagonist.

The show was announced on December 5, 2020, which coincided with the fictional birthday of the series’ protagonist Lelouch. It wasn’t a mere anniversary of sorts either, with the new film’s “reveal” being part of a tentative 10-year plan for the franchise. Yoshimitsu Ohashi, who had previously worked on the franchise, was set to direct, with the popular studio Sunrise handling production. Though this minute bit of info didn’t leave much to go on, the show was stated at the time to be on track for a 2021 release date, which clearly did not come to fruition.

Some Fans Doubt that Code Geass: Z of the Recapture Is Ever Releasing

Whatever Happened to Code Geass: Z of the Recapture?_1

Following years without any new info, let alone Z of the Recapture being released, some fans have questioned the authenticity of the project. It’s highly possible, given the 2020 announcement of the series, that the still-unforeseen impact of COVID-19 on the anime industry was a massive setback for the show. Given how long it’s been, however, this is somewhat unlikely. That’s especially the case given that anime delayed due to COVID-19 had this status made official, with recent shows such as Uncle from Another World notably being pushed back. This makes it increasingly difficult to gauge the current status of the show.

Code Geass: Z of the Recapture had its announcement revealed by reputable source Crunchyroll, a streaming service that also hosts the franchise so far. Thus, it’s hard to throw the supposed new show away as a mere false rumor. At the same time, it seems unlikely that the series will be given a release date any time soon, let alone be made. Beyond the 4D re-release of Lelouch of the Re;surrection, there’s been no real action for the franchise as a whole, meaning that the latest movie could have well been the final addition. Even if fans were hoping to see some headway made in 2023, the reality is that the once-venerable Code Geass franchise is probably dead in the water, at least for the foreseeable future.
