Chainsaw Man’s Makima Cosplays Hunter x Hunter’s Hisoka in Hybrid Fan Art

A new piece of anime fan art fuses the worlds of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man and Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter.

Artist and graduate student SEA uploaded the mash-up image on Twitter. It showcases Makima, a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter, dressed up as none other than Phantom Troupe member Hisoka. The artwork may be a subtle reference to a shocking twist about Makima’s character, explored during the Public Safety Saga story arc.

Both Manga Franchises Are Huge Hits

Fujimoto originally published his Chainsaw Man manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in December 2018. In 2020, the publisher moved the ongoing series to Shōnen Jump+, where it remains to this day. The story follows Denji, an extremely poor young man who works as a devil killer with the help of a dog-like being named Pochita in order to pay off the debt his dead father left behind. After he is betrayed by his employers, Pochita grants Denji the ability to transform parts of his body into chainsaws, and the young man finds himself recruited by the government to help neutralize monstrous threats.

Chainsaw Man has garnered a passionate fan following, and over 16 million copies of the manga have been sold worldwide as of September. Those fans have also produced a plethora of impressive fan-made content; beyond SEA’s mash-up, other recent examples include an adorable Pochita-inspired Jack-o’-Lantern and several terrifying cosplays. Moreover, the story has performed well with critics, making Chainsaw Man a consistent awards season contender. In both 2021 and 2022, it won the Best Manga category at the Harvey Awards.

Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter manga first appeared in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in 1998, and despite several extended hiatuses, the series has produced 36 volumes worth of content so far. The story focuses on Gon Freecss, a young boy who dreams of becoming a world-renowned Hunter like his father. However, when Gon sets off on his own journey, he discovers the world can be incredibly dangerous.

Over 84 million copies of the Hunter x Hunter manga have been sold across the globe, and the series has regularly featured on Diamond Comic Distributors’ list of top-selling graphic novels. Moreover, in 2019, it ranked seventh on Da Vinci magazine’s annual Book of the Year list, and in 2021, Hunter x Hunter was voted the 11th most popular manga according to TV Asahi’s Manga Sōsenkyo’s poll.

Both the Chainsaw Man and Hunter x Hunter anime adaptations are available to stream on Crunchyroll.
