Chainsaw Man Includes Popular Makima Fan Art in End Credits

Some Chainsaw Man enthusiasts spotted a curious image of Makima in the ending credits for Episode 7 — one that looked similar to a fan art created three years ago.

Sung by ano, Episode 7’s ending theme song “ALL KINDS OF KISSES” sends viewers back all the way to the ’90s. The ending channels a very retro aesthetic with bleak and grittier colors. Transported into a bulky TV set, Denji and Makima interact with each other like they’re characters in a video game. One viewer (PridefulISin) noticed a shot of Makima with her arms behind her back, a pose that purposefully draws viewers’ attention to her chest, which looks shockingly like fan art created by usa (@usa18_) back in November 2019.

The Resemblance Between the Illustrations Is Uncanny

There are some slight differences between the fan art and the Makima that appears in the ending theme song, such as the way the animators have chosen to illustrate her hair. Some commenters wondered if MAPPA, who produces the anime adaptation, gave the artist credit. A few pointed out that the studio owns the license to animate Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga series and therefore does not need to. Nonetheless, it’s still quite a notable accomplishment to have fan art featured in an anime, and as one commenter said, “That’s some insane flex for the artist.” Unfortunately, the artist has not been active on Twitter since October 2020 and has yet to respond to the many commenters flocking to their account to let them know that their fan art had made it to the big screen.

Paying Homage to Artists

A different artist performs the ending songs for each episode of the Chainsaw Man anime and has a hugely distinctive style and vibe. Some of the endings, such as the one in Episode 3 sung by MAXIMUM THE HORMONE are more trippy, which fits the aggressive singing in “HAWATARI NIOKU CENTI.” Others, such as syudou’s surreal ending theme song in Episode 5, “In the Back Room” and Kanaria’s “Rendezvous,” takes inspiration from the renowned Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher.

Fujimoto published the first 97 chapters of his bestselling manga series Chainsaw Man in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The remaining chapters, which are currently ongoing, can be read on Shōnen Jump+. Chainsaw Man, which follows a young man who has the ability to transform into a formidable being called Chainsaw Man, received an anime adaptation with Ryū Nakayama as the director. The opening song “Kick Back,” sung by Kenshi Yonezu, has garnered over 46 million views. The other ending theme songs are by TK, Queen Bee, PEOPLE 1 and Aimer, in no particular order.

All the ending theme songs of Chainsaw Man up until Episode 7 are available to watch on MAPPA’s YouTube channel. Chainsaw Man streams every Tuesday on Crunchyroll.
