The Chainsaw Man anime adaptation has divided fans — with some demanding a remake but many others quickly rushing to the current adaptation’s defense.

A petition has been going around due to one viewer in Japan’s displeasure at MAPPA’s adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s critically-acclaimed Chainsaw Man manga series. In the petition, the fan wrote out a number of issues they had with the anime, such as the animation quality, directorial choices and the voice actor performances. While the petition has already garnered over 1,600 signatures, numerous fans have strongly disagreed that Chainsaw Man needs a reboot.

The Petition Frowned On Chainsaw Man’s Realism

One of the things the petition demanded to see changed was the director, as they felt that Ryū Nakayama relied too much on realism. Some fans pointed out that the style has lent Chainsaw Man a more cinematic design, with Eff (ef_dot_me) arguing that this is due to “the director and Fujimoto’s love for cinema. This adaptation is trying to give its own spin on the story rather than be a 1:1 recreation.” On more than one occasion, Fujimoto has demonstrated himself to be a film buff both verbally and through his works such as the one-shot Goodbye, Eri. Moreover, the mangaka has also voiced his desire to see the anime go in a new direction, remarking that he understands manga and animation are two different mediums.

Most Fans Love Chainsaw Man as It Is

One Twitter user cheekily asked, “That petition to remake the chainsaw man anime is hilarious cuz what more could you want from this adaptation?? God directing each episode??” Another fan Tweeted, “I wish my favourite Anime’s were animated like Chainsaw Man,” with another fan, Bushi (@DreadBoyRoy), writing, “I’m sorry but [Chainsaw Man] fans need the [The Promised Neverland] season 2 treatment to humble them.” Season 2 of The Promised Neverland and Tokyo Ghoul were both series that received negative reception for their anime adaptation, with both drawing criticisms for skipping crucial plot lines from their respective manga series and poor animation. In comparison, these fans argued that Chainsaw Man’s adaptation is faithful and of high animation quality.

MAPPA adapted Fujimoto’s dark fantasy manga into an anime, with the first episode premiering in October 2022. Directed by Nakayama and Masato Nakazono as the chief episode director, Chainsaw Man revolves around high schooler Denji, who joins the Public Safety Devil Hunters as the Chainsaw Man to find and defeat the Gun Devil who is responsible for causing the greatest massacre in history. Hiroshi Seko wrote the script with character designs by Kazutaka Sugiyama and Devil designs by Kiyotaka Oshiyama. Tatsuya Yoshihara directs the action, with Kensuke Ushio composing the music. Voicing Denji is Kikunosuke Toya, with Tomori Kusunoki, Shogo Sakata and Fairouz Ai joining him as Makima, Aki Hayakawa and Power, respectively.

Chainsaw Man is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
