The following contains spoilers for Episode 9 of Chainsaw Man,”FROM KYOTO,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.

One of the scariest aspects of Chainsaw Man is how the Public Safety Unit in Japan has its devil hunters working on contracts with demons. This powers them up, creating unpredictable assassins meant to clean up the nation. In addition, the likes of Hayakawa and such have been using hybrids like Denji, as well as the hot-headed Power, to supplement their arsenal.

This creates a highly flammable situation, with the likes of Himeno with her Ghost Devil, Hayakawa with his Fox, and Denji with his Chainsaw Devil all weapons of mass destruction that could cause immense chaos. Well, come Episode 9, another surprising powerhouse has been unveiled as Makima comes to the fore. And make no mistake — with her godlike abilities, she comes off like a remix of Scarlet Witch, who laps up gruesome deaths in a more sadistic manner.

Marvel’s Scarlet Witch Is a Scary Killer

Wanda Maximoff has always been a frightening individual due to her reality-warping powers. It showed when she created the House of M event in the comics, then wiped most mutants off the face of the Earth with just a few words. The X-Men and Avengers often live in fear of her — even after she atoned — with the Marvel Cinematic Universe following suit in shaping her as an anti-hero and risky Nexus being.

In the movies, Wanda became a murderous Scarlet Witch come Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. She hated losing her twins after destroying her Westview fake reality, so she went on a killing spree across different worlds to get America Chavez to bring them back. It led to that iconic slaughter of the Illuminati, where she just used mere thought to destroy Black Bolt, snap Professor Xavier’s neck by tricking him with a ‘clone,’ and then tear Reed Richards to shreds. Simply put, Wanda was a monster, which has fans eager to see what’ll happen next after she was presumed dead.

Chainsaw Man’s Makima Is a Pink-Haired Wanda Pastiche

Makima is the boss running Chainsaw Man’s Public Safety Unit, but no one knows her abilities. Sadly, she gets killed when assassins take out most of her agents, including her. They shoot her up on a train en route to Kyoto for a business meeting — but Makima actually faked her death. It’s unclear whether she revived herself or if her being killed is an illusion, but she sneaks up behind the assailants and kills them off-screen.

Makima then orders her Kyoto colleagues to bring her prisoners, using a unique ritual that causes them to pass out and seemingly die once they say the name of the targets — the very men who hit her people. This builds up a gory crusade, as Makima blows their heads and bodies up by just thinking it from miles away. It nods to an unhinged Scarlet Witch who can end lives by just thinking it, with Makima smiling as it all occurs.

It’s a little odd because she should be mourning her crew and shouldn’t have all the names readily available, but Makima clearly has a mission to stick to and the resources to boot. Ultimately, she’s cooler, more calculating and has the government at her disposal, leaving Chainsaw Man viewers curious what other powers she possesses as this pseudo-god who basks in revenge.
