Chainsaw Man Cosplay Captures Special Division Captain Kishibe’s Brooding Energy

A costume maker extraordinaire is showcasing a striking take on Chainsaw Man’s Kishibe.

GraysonFin, a prominent cosplayer, has posted various shots of a Chainsaw Man-inspired costume on Reddit. One shot sees him smoking a cigarette and another shows him wielding a bloody knife, but all the images spotlight the captain of the Tokyo Special Division 4’s facial scar. Kishibe isn’t the only popular anime character GraysonFin has brought to life. His Reddit account features equally impressive photos of cosplay for icons like Loid Forger from Spy x Family and Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.

What Is Chainsaw Man About?

The Chainsaw Man manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto made its debut in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump in December 2018 and in 2020, the series moved to Shōnen Jump+, where it continues its serialization run to this day. The title entered a brief hiatus after the publication of Chapter 121, which ended on an extensional cliffhanger. Set in a world where devils present a very real threat, the story follows Denji, an extremely impoverished youth who takes on dangerous jobs in order to work off a gigantic debt left behind by his dead father. However, after he is betrayed by his gangster employers, the young man finds himself recruited by a shady governmental organization. As part of the Public Safety unit, Denji uses his unique ability to transform his limbs into chainsaws to kill devils.

Chainsaw Man has sold over 23 million copies globally, making it one of the best-selling manga of all time alongside Hiro Mashima’s Rave Master and Kazuya Minekura’s Saiyuki. Furthermore, Fujimoto’s series has ranked high on the New York Best Sellers list for graphic books multiple times, and it took home the Harvey Award for Best Manga in both 2021 and 2022.

Chainsaw Man Fan Creations

The manga’s incredible levels of popularity and acclaim mean its serves as a common inspiration for fan-made content, and Kishibe isn’t the only character inspiring impressive cosplay. For example, a talented Chainsaw Man fan crafted a mind-boggling version of Makima, perfectly capturing her sinister nature, and TikTok star Stella Chuu uploaded a video of her Himeno cosplay.

Fans also create art to celebrate the series. Notably, the popular online artist duo hanavbara posted several images that reimagine fan-favorite characters like Denji, Power, Aki and Pochita in the classic style of the 1900s Sailor Moon anime. The stylistic change gives the usually bloody and dark world of Chainsaw Man a cutesy makeover.

VIZ Media distributes the Chainsaw Man manga in North America.
