Another appetite-wetting trailer has dropped for MAPPA’s upcoming anime adaptation of Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill.
The video, which is available on the animation studio’s official YouTube Channel, spotlights protagonist Mukouda’s unique culinary abilities and the young man’s relationship dynamic with his two primary companions, the giant wolf Fel and the slime Sui. It also confirms that Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill will premiere in January as part of the winter 2023 anime season.
Campfire Cooking Began as a Self-published Light Novel
Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill originated as a light novel series by Ren Eguchi on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō self-publishing website, first appearing on the site in January 2016. Publisher Overlap eventually acquired it, and as of June 2022, there are 12 volumes worth of content. The story follows Mukouda, a seemingly regular guy who accidentally transports to a fantastical realm of mages and warriors. However, unlike most other main characters in the isekai genre, he soon discovers he isn’t one of the chosen heroes and is comically underpowered. Deciding to make the best of his situation, he begins selling delicious food in order to make enough money to live comfortably.
The creative team behind MAPPA’s anime adaptation of Eguchi’s light novels features multiple veterans of the anime industry; this includes Kiyoshi Matsuda, who previously worked on Yu-Gi-O! GX and Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!, and writer Michiko Yokote, who penned the scripts for Bleach: The Diamond Dust Rebellion and Digimon: Data Squad. Moreover, several experienced and talented voice actors are contributing to the project. For example, Hina Kino (Irina: The Vampire Cosmonaut) voices Sui, while Satoshi Hino (Arifureta – From Commonplace to World’s Strongest) plays Fel.
Most notably, Yuma Uchida, the iconic actor behind Ash Lynx in Banana Fish, Megumi Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen and Ein Dalton in Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, provides the voices for Mukouda. Uchida also performs Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill’s ending theme song.
MAPPA’s new series will officially debut on Tokyo TV in Japan at the beginning of next year; however, the show received a special advanced screening in the country on Dec. 26. In terms of the anime’s international release, Crunchyroll has confirmed that it has licensed Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill.
Eguchi’s light novel series is distributed in North America by J-Novel Club.
