K-Pop singer AleXa is lending her voice to the English version of an OST for The Broken Ring: This Marriage Will Fail Anyway.
Uploaded by Tappytoon on Instagram, the slow ballad OST “Midnight Sun” accompanies a moving animation of the webcomic, focusing on the events in Inés’s past lives. The English lyrics speak of longing, yearning and loneliness. However, Inés meets someone, Cárcel, who becomes “the light shining over/The black and gloomy nights.” Despite the tumultuous beginning to their relationship, Cárcel has become the person Inés needs “through the thousand years/Evermore.” The Korean version released on Nov. 2, 2022 on 1theK’s YouTube channel.

AleXa’s Determination Launched Her Career
AleXa is a well-rounded dancer, having taken lessons in ballet, jazz, hip-hop and tap. Prior to her career as a K-Pop idol, AleXa posted dance covers of various K-Pop songs on Instagram and Snapchat. In 2016, she auditioned for “Rising Legends,” but did not make it into the training programs. Two years later, she competed on “Produce 48,” a television show that brings together 96 girls from entertainment companies and idol groups to form a 12-person Korean-Japanese girl group, contracted for only 2.5 years. She ended the show ranked 82. In 2019, after she signed onto ZB Label, she debuted with “Bomb.” In 2022, she competed in “American Song Contest,” where she represented Oklahoma, ultimately winning with “Wonderland.”
AleXa’s passion for K-Pop is evident, but in a 2021 interview with Korea JoongAng Daily, she revealed she has a personal goal as an artist that is deeply rooted in her family history and her desire to reconnect her mother back to her birth family. A family in the U.S. adopted AleXa’s mother when she was five. The singer said, “I think that in me, winding up back in my mother’s country, learning her language now, it’s some weird twist of fate, I suppose […] One of my largest goals as an artist is, through my work, if I do become well known in Korea that somehow, some family member will look back and realize that is our child, or niece, or sister or whoever.”
The Broken Ring Covers Complex Topics
Written originally by Chacha Kim and adapted into a webcomic by Chokam with art by Cheong-gwa, The Broken Ring has close to 2 million views on Tappytoon. When he was six years old, Cárcel realized the strange, expressionless girl dressed all in black had chosen him as her betrothed purely because of his handsome looks. Horrified to know that he’ll soon lose his bachelor status, Cárcel decides to spend his youth bedding as many women as possible before his wedding. However, when Inés learns of his infidelity after 17 years of engagement, instead of expressing anger or hurt, she seems completely indifferent, even bored, telling Cárcel flat-out that she has no interest in him at all. Stunned that Inés doesn’t seem the least bit bothered and, on the contrary, appears to encourage him to continue his scoundrel-like ways, Cárcel aims to prove to her he can be a good husband.
There are currently 30 chapters out so far. The novel and webcomic of The Broken Ring are both available on Tappytoon, with the former only available to read on the mobile app.
