The Boruto Anime Is Reportedly Going on Hiatus This Summer

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is reportedly going on an indefinite hiatus.

According to a recent tweet from Anime News and Facts (@AniNewsAndFacts), the hiatus is due to start this April after the airing of Episode 293. This would mark the first time Naruto’s popular follow-up series has been put on hold. It’s unclear if there is a projected timeframe for when Boruto would return, nor is the leak about a hiatus confirmed.

Boruto Follows the Adventures of Naruto’s Son

After the completion of Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto manga series in November 2014, the franchise’s focus switched from the titular character to his son, Boruto. On Aug. 7, 2015, Boruto made his grand debut in Boruto: Naruto the Movie. Directed by Hiroyuki Yamashita (The Last: Naruto the Movie) and Toshiyuki Tsuru (Naruto Shippuden), this film follows Boruto and his fellow Hidden Leaf Ninjas as they enter the Chunin Exams. The film debuted in North America on Oct. 10, 2015.

Following the film’s release, Weekly Shonen Jump launched the Boruto manga series in May 2016. Although Ukyo Kodachi served as the manga’s primary author for Chapters 1-51, Masashi Kishimoto and his assistant Mikio Ikemoto began writing the series starting from Chapter 52. Pierrot’s popular Boruto anime adaptation debuted in April 2017. This series introduces Boruto as a frustrated young ninja desperate to escape the shadow cast by his legendary father. To do so, he begins training with Naruto’s old friend and rival, Sasuke Uchiha, with additional help from his classmates, Mitsuki and Sarada Uchiha. The anime is currently in the middle of the manga’s “Code Arc,” which has Boruto and his friends training together to take on a new villain called “Code,” who wishes to become a Celestial Being by absorbing all the universe’s chakra.

Naruto Fans Criticize Boruto’s Stories

While the Naruto series is one of the most popular shonen of all time, fans have occasionally shown hostility towards its successor. In January of this year, the Boruto anime covered the “Sasuke’s Story” arc, which covers the character’s journeys while serving as a traveling agent for the Konoha village. One particularly famous episode of this arc has Sasuke fighting a dinosaur at an archeological observatory. Although this entire storyline originates from the light novel series Sasuke’s Story: The Uchiha and the Heavenly Stardust, many viewers took it as an opportunity to bash Boruto, accusing the creators of inventing the bizarre scenario to keep people interested in an otherwise lackluster anime. One fan even blamed the scene on Kishimoto’s lack of quality control.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is available to stream on Hulu. The manga is available in English from VIZ Media.
