Blue Sky Complex, the Boys’ Love manga about a high school romance, will receive a rather unique live-action adaptation.
According to MARBLE COMICS (@/tokyomangasha) and Redbeanime, Blue Sky Complex will air for five episodes, and fans will find themselves thrown into the world of Narasaki and Natsuki, almost as if they’re sitting right beside the two characters in the quiet atmosphere of the library, in a VR immersive experience. Each episode will air between five and 11 minutes. The series premieres in Japan on Feb. 27, 2023.
Blue Sky Complex will have director Keiichi Kobayashi helming the adaptation, who has an impressive list of credentials. His feature film debut Momoiro Sora wo won Best Picture Award at the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival. Rin Shuto will write the screenplay, and they previously directed the 2021 film Hiraite, based on a novel by Risa Wataya. Kosei Tsubokura portrays the infamous delinquent Natsuki Terashima and Shuya Sunagawa as the studious Motochika Narasaki.
Blue Sky Complex’s Creator Celebrated the Announcement
Mangaka Kei Ichikawa expressed her excitement at seeing her work finally come to life and uploaded a new illustration of Natsuki and Motochika together with the former tugging on his boyfriend’s tie. The announcement of the live-action adaptation has brought fans joy, with one fan tweeting, “blue sky complex deserves the world,” and another begging for a more extended adaptation. Other BL mangaka like Mio Tennouji (Pink Gold and Renai Paradox) congratulated Ichikawa.
Released first in 2014, Blue Sky Complex is a tender love story. Nestled in the corner of the high school is a library where two teenage boys sit in silence. One is Natsuki Terashima, an infamous delinquent who constantly gets into fights, and the other is Motochika Narasaki, a quiet student who spends most of his time reading. At his teacher’s behest, Natsuki agrees to supervise Natsuki in the library. Although Motochika is, at first, cautious of Natsuki, given his reputation, he discovers he’s not as dangerous or unruly as the rumors say he is and seems to have a voracious hunger for reading anything under the sun. Motochika agrees to stay with Natsuki until the start of summer vacation, but as their feelings grow, they discover they might not want to say goodbye when their time together comes to an end.
