Considered one of shōnen’s Big Three, Bleach has an immense fan base that continues to craft impressive works as fan-made content. As such, Byakuya isn’t the only fan-favorite character to inspire amazing cosplays. Towards the end of last year, expert costume maker Izanamitan posted images of a bloody rendition of Retsu Unohana, while notable cosplayer Dima_Batalov uploaded a picture of her take on the Goddess of Flash, Yoruichi.

Tite Kubo’s Bleach manga series appeared in Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump from August 2001 until August 2016, producing 74 volumes worth of content. The story follows high school delinquent Ichigo Kurosaki, who has the ability to see spirits. After encountering a wounded soul reaper named Rukia Kuchiki, he gains the power to fight Hollows, corrupted entities that survive by eating other souls. Bleach has sold over 130 million copies around the world, making it one of the best-selling manga of all time alongside Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece and Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto.

Studio Pierrot’s original Bleach anime adaptation initially aired from October 2004 to March 2006, and its 366 episodes covered most but not all of Kubo’s story. The sequel show, Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, which depicts the story arc of the same name from the manga, premiered its first part in October 2022. The second part will debut in July 2023, and the announcement included promotional artwork of Ichigo duel-wielding two very large swords.

Thousand-Year Blood War sees the Soul Society and Gotei 13 embroiled in a deadly and brutal battle with the Wandenreich, a secret Quincy empire. The conflict has major consequences and repercussions for several fan-favorite characters with Byakuya in particular suffering an intense loss early on in the war. However, the story doesn’t just spotlight well-established characters, it also introduces a wealth of new faces like the nefarious Yhwach and the enigmatic members of the Zero Division.

Both the first Bleach anime and Thousand-Year Blood War are available to stream on Hulu. Madman Entertainment distributes Kubo’s manga in Australia, while VIZ Media distributes the series in North America.
