Berserk: The Golden Age Arc – Memorial Edition’s last episode honored the franchise’s late creator, Kentaro Miura.
The Twitter user @dailycascaa highlighted this tribute on their page. At the end of Episode 13, a brief passage reads, “Always chasing that ever-twinkling light. With gratitude, to Kentaro Miura Sensei.” Miura tragically passed away in May of last year from an acute aortic dissection. The artist was 54 years old.
Miura’s Planning Kept Berserk Running
As of November 2022, there are 41 volumes of Berserk released in Japan. Miura’s classic dark fantasy manga began serialization in Hakusensha’s Young Animal Magazine in 1989. After the artist’s death, Miura’s manga production studio, Gaga, continued work on the series with supervision from Kouji Mori (Holyland, Jisatsutou,) who Miura confided in regarding the story’s future direction. While Mori was privy to some of Miura’s plans, Gaga’s editorial department released a statement back in June informing readers that it would be “impossible” to complete the series exactly as Miura intended, as the artist “did not leave behind rough drafts.” However, by utilizing the artist’s plans and notes, the editorial staff assured fans that it would attempt “to deliver the Berserk that Mr. Miura envisioned to everyone as faithfully as possible.” The last chapter penned by Miura personally was Chapter 364, “Tears of Morning Dew,” which debuted in September 2021.
The Golden Age Arc- Memorial Edition is a remastered television edit of Studio 4°C’s Berserk Golden Age Arc film trilogy. It also adds new scenes never included in the original films. Adapting the second main story arc of Miura’s manga, the series follows a swordsman named Guts who gets recruited into a band of mercenaries called “The Band of the Hawk,” led by the charismatic Griffith, who dreams of one day ruling his own kingdom. When Guts agrees to help Griffith rise to power, the band later gets enlisted into a massive war campaign, ultimately becoming key combatants in a decisive final battle over a fortress called Doldrey. When Griffith is taken prisoner after this battle, Guts and the band embark on a quest to rescue him. Yuta Sano directed The Golden Age Arc- Memorial Edition, while Ichiro Okouchi (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion) wrote the script.
Golden Age Arc- Memorial Edition started airing in Japan in October 2022. Studio 4°C’s Golden Age Arc film trilogy is available to stream on Netflix. The Berserk manga is available in English from Dark Horse Comics.
