The following contains spoilers for Episode 7 of Beast Tamer, available for streaming on Crunchyroll with English subtitles.

Rein’s collectathon continued in the latest episode of Beast Tamer, as the Fairies Sora and Luna became a new permanent fixture in his all-female party, continuing the trend. Sora and Luna were teased in the trailers leading up to the show’s release, and their presence in the opening sequence showed that their joining was an inevitability rather than a question mark.

No girls beyond Sora and Luna have been teased, meaning that they’re likely the last two members of the party, which is definitely a good thing. It expanded so rapidly that it was hard to develop any emotional connections with the members that were already there, but the twins already seem to be making the party more interesting with their clashing personalities.

Sora and Luna Might be Twins But Their Personalities Are Mirrors

Sora was introduced as a shy, reserved girl, but with the addition of her sister, this becomes increasingly apparent. Luna is brash, flirty and much more open than her twin, which often causes them to get into fights with each other. After being rescued by Rein’s party from the Shadow Knight, Luna made a comment about what might have happened to her if she wasn’t rescued in time.

Rather than the more obvious “I might have been killed,” Luna opted for the more imaginative scenario in which she could have been forced to do lewd things, after which she openly mocked Rein, suggesting that his male imagination must surely be running wild at the possibility. Just as quickly, she was chastised by Sora for not being more grateful to them, starting what will likely be the first of many arguments between the twins.

Has Rein’s Party Expanded Too Quickly?

The party has quickly gone from just two to five in only seven episodes, which wouldn’t be strange in something like a shonen where the cast of characters tends to be massive, but Rein’s party is clearly meant to be very tightly-knit. The problem with this is that Beast Tamer hasn’t done a good job of convincing the audience of it.

While the story tends to lean heavily into tropes such as the archetypical girls, the overpowered protagonist with mysterious powers and so on, it has skimped on character development. The party has barely known each other for any significant amount of time, and yet it’s conveyed that they would now give their lives for each other if necessary.

While the theme of the show is the bond between the party members, the story needed to do a much better job of building on these bonds before adding more characters to the mix. Hopefully, now that Rein’s party doesn’t seem to be getting any bigger any time soon, the story will focus on some much-needed character development instead.
