Several teasers and character visuals dropped leading up to the premiere of the first part, including a somber Levi where half of his face is wrapped in bandages and Hange wearing a soft smile on their face. The most recent trailer revealed an intense confrontation between Eren and the rest of his friends as the series heads, full-speed, into an emotional finale. SiM returned to the Attack on Titan franchise with their opening song for The Final Season: Part 3, “Under the Tree.” The band released the animated music video on their YouTube channel, tracing all the events that have happened thus far and ending, appropriately, with Eren gazing up as he sits under a massive tree. The band previously provided the vocals for the opening song of The Final Season: Part 2 with “The Rumbling.”
Wit Studio (Spy x Family and The Ancient Magus’ Bride) produced the first three seasons of Attack on Titan before MAPPA took over as the animation studio for the fourth and final season of Attack on Titan. MAPPA split the last season into three parts, with the first airing in January 2021 with 16 episodes and the second in February 2022 with 12 episodes. The announcement of Part 3 of The Final Season revealed it would be split again into two parts. Masafumi Mima, the sound director for the series, revealed that the restrictions enacted in a post-COVID-19 era had contributed to the production delays.
Hajime Isayama’s critically-acclaimed manga series Attack on Titan debuted in September 2009 in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine. The series has sold over 110 million copies as of September 2022, and despite ending in April 2021 with a somewhat controversial finale still maintains a strong fanbase. Attack on Titan follows Eren Yeager, who, after years of being trapped behind a walled city by humanoid monsters known as the Titans, seeks to find a way to free humanity. Initially, he thought the solution to this was to join the Survey Corps, but as the truth about his ancestry and the Titans emerge, he realizes that he must employ a more drastic method to achieve the freedom he longs for.
The first three seasons and the first part of The Final Season: Part 3 are available to stream on Crunchyroll. Part 2 of The Final Season: Part 3 premieres in the fall.
