The third and final part of Attack on Titan is nearly here, and to hold fans over, a sneak peek into the production process has been released.
As reported by Shonenleaks’s Twitter account, NHK’s television program 100-Camera Stories set up at MAPPA to follow the animators’ movements as they worked on the conclusion to the Attack on Titan anime series. While the video speeds up the animators’ movements, it still captures each animator’s focused attention as they work on their individual panels. The video also went into the behind-the-scenes of animating the action sequences, particularly highlighting the animation for the Beast Titan. Each animator works in a separate cubicle, and most of their desk area has papers and other writing utensils strewn about.
While many Twitter users expressed excitement and anticipation over the sneak preview, most noted how tired the staff looked. Many animators were rubbing their eyes, sitting back in their chairs and patting their faces lightly to wake themselves up and appeared quite tired. One commented, “Mappa holding them hostage none of them have seen their families or the sun past 6 months,” and another said, “I can’t even begin to fathom the life of a MAPPA animator.”
MAPPA Is the Golden Standard for Anime
MAPPA has quickly risen in the anime industry as one of the most reputable studios in the last few years. Their international recognition started in 2016 when they produced the original work Yuri!!! on Ice and garnered positive reviews for its depiction of a same-sex relationship between the two main characters and Yuuri’s anxiety. Starting in 2020, the studio worked on Jujutsu Kaisen, Season 4 of Attack on Titan and Chainsaw Man. The studio has also received heavy criticism for their poor working conditions with the studio’s intense production schedule, with an episode director of Attack on Titan: The Final Part 2 Tweeting that he went home for the first time in three days, resulting in overworked and underpaid employees. In 2021, the studio revealed they would have a new branch to help improve the working conditions for animators working on the Chainsaw Man anime.
