Attack on Titan Releases New Illustrations Showcasing a Soft Ghibli-Style

The Attack on Titan characters look a little softer and more serene than usual in some new artwork.

Attack on Titan Wiki created a compilation of eight of the characters from the hit franchise. The Ghibli-like images come from the cover of the character image songs representing the featured character, which released in 2017. Ever since Wit Studio produced the anime adaptation, Attack on Titan became known for its bold and bright colors. However, in these original illustrations, the artist tones down the colors. Coupled with the pencil strokes, it results in a much softer appearance. Despite the more gentle art style, each character’s charisma and fierceness still exudes through their eyes and expressions.

The Music of Attack on Titan

The first gentle character image song featured Eren Yeager’s voice actor Yūki Kaji singing “Helpless World.” Following Eren is his childhood friend Mikasa Ackerman, voiced by Yui Ishikawa, who sings “No matter where you are.” Completing the trio of friends is Armin Arlert, voiced by Marina Inoue, who sings “Far away.”

Singing “Rusty Honesty” is Jean Kirstein’s voice actor Kishō Taniyama. Featured on the same cover are Bertholdt Hoover and Reiner Braun, although it’s only Bertholdt’s voice actor Tomohisa Hashizume who sings “Alternate Drive.” Hiroshi Kamiya, who voices Levi Ackerman, sings “Dark Side of the Moon,” an arrangement of “The Reluctant Heroes.” Lastly, Erwin Smith’s voice actor Daisuke Ono sings “Hope of Mankind,” an arrangement of “theDOGS.” Hiroyuki Sawano and Kohta Yamamoto composed every character song with the latter arranging them.

Created by Hajime Isayama, Attack on Titan is one of the top best-selling manga series and reportedly has over 110 million tankōbon copies in print worldwide. The story follows a young boy named Eren Yeager who vows to free humanity after being trapped behind a walled city for years and watching giant humanoid creatures called Titans kill and eat people, including his mother. Attack on Titan began serialization in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in September 2009 before concluding in April 2021. The series has won several awards including the Harvey Award and Best Manga at several award ceremonies from 2011 to 2015. Wit Studio adapted the first three seasons of the anime until MAPPA took over and produced the fourth season. Directed by Yuichiro Hayashi, Season 4, called Attack on Titan: The Final Season, is divided into three parts with the first two parts airing from December 2020 to April 2022 and adapts the “Marley” and “War for Paradis” arcs.

All episodes of Attack on Titan are available to stream on Crunchyroll. Attack on Titan: The Final Season – Part 3 is set to premiere sometime in 2023.
