Attack on Titan: The Final Season takes the throne as the top-rated anime series.
As shown on MyAnimeList, MAPPA’s iconic series now sits #1 spot with an impressive 9.23 rating, beating out Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’s score of 9.11. Brotherhood is now at the #2 spot, just barely beating Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War’s 9.10 rating. The gripping finale of Eren’s story debuted its second part back in Jan. 2022, and is now in the middle of its third and last part, which premiered as a one-hour special on March 3.
What Makes Attack on Titan So Good?
Based on the manga by Hajime Isayama, Attack on Titan takes place in a world plagued by enormous, bloodthirsty monsters called Titans that force what is left of humanity to take shelter behind huge stone walls. After his family is wiped out, Eren and his adopted sister Mikasa join up with the Survey Corps, a group dedicated to defeating Titans and taking back the world for mankind. Picking up where Part 2 left off, The Final Season – Part 3 focuses on a massive event called “The Rumbling,” which Eren causes by releasing the Colossal Titans trapped behind Paradis Island’s walls. Although this act leaves the world at the Titan’s mercy, Eren believes that it is also mankind’s only chance for freedom.
The passion of the Attack on Titan fanbase is evident in ways besides the series’ high rating. Crunchyroll recently encountered fan pushback for failing to simulcast Part 3’s hour-long premiere at the time of its release in Japan. The delay lasted at least two hours, which caused Many AoT fans to flock to Crunchyroll’s Twitter and demand that it air the episode. The hour-long special episode is now available on the platform.
The Attack on Titan franchise extends beyond the popular anime and manga. In 2015, Toho Pictures released a two-part live-action Attack on Titan film. Directed by Shinji Higuchi, this movie covered the first part of the manga’s story, with Haruma Miura playing the role of Eren. Additional cast included Kiko Mizuhara as Mikasa, Kanata Hongo as Armin and Satomi Ishihara as Hange Zoe. Earlier this year, a stage musical adaptation of Attack on Titan premiered at the Orix Theater in Osaka, Japan, and later at the Seinenkan Hall in Tokyo. Go Ueki directed the production, while KEN THE 390 served as the show’s musical director. The show had its last performance on Jan. 24.
Attack on Titan is available to stream on Hulu and Crunchyroll. The manga is available in English from Kodansha US.
