The following contains major spoilers for the Attack on Titan Final Season Part 3 premiere, “The Final Chapters Special 1,” now streaming on Crunchyroll.
One of the animators who personally had a hand in producing Hange’s final fight Attack on Titan: The Final Season Part 3 has a heartfelt message for fans.
The Final Season Part 3 just aired on March 3 and Attack on Titan fans are still trying to accept that Hange Zoë, the feisty genius Commander, has died. ヨウカン (@/jason2937tw), an animator who was in charge of the scene where Hange heads into battle facing the Titans approaching ahead, uploaded a new illustration of the Commander. Set upon a blue sky, Hange has their hands on their hips with a content smile on their face and the “Wings of Freedom” insignia clearly visible on their cloak. Behind them are the rest of their fallen comrades, waiting for Hange to join them. In a translation via ComicBook.com, the animator said “I apologize for any inconvenience caused to director Hayashi and our animation director. I’m glad I was able to create the most heart-wrenching scene with my own work. It was nice to see the end of Hange. Attack on Titan will be seen through to the end soon.”
Attack on Titans Fans React to Hange’s Death
Attack on Titan fans thanked the animator for their work, complimenting on how cool Hange looked. One commented that it had been rather difficult to watch the scene as their tears had made everything rather blurry. Hange dying while fighting the Titans and buying enough time for their friends and comrades to escape is a fitting end for the courageous Commander who had devoted much of their lives to studying the Titans. Even so, seeing Hange’s death happen before the fans’ eyes rendered almost all of them an emotional wreck.
The day the first part of The Final Season Part 3 aired, fans flooded social media platforms asking the whereabouts of the episode as it had already aired in Japan and international fans still had no means of watching it yet. Some comments ranged from lighthearted humor while others jokingly threatened to head to Crunchyroll’s headquarters to demand the platform release the episode. After a delay spanning a few hours, Crunchyroll finally launched the special hour-long episode of The Final Season Part 3 on March 3 at approximately 3 PM PST.
Attack on Titan, created by Hajime Isayama, has sold over 110 million copies as of September 2022. Its popularity has led to the series receiving an anime adaptation with the first three seasons animated by Wit Studio (Spy x Family and Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song) before moving to MAPPA for its final season. The studio opted to split the last season into three parts with the hour-long episode of Part 3 premiering in March. The episode led to Attack on Titan: The Final Season overtaking Fullmetal Alchemist as the highest-rated anime on MyAnimeList as of this article’s writing.
Part 1 of The Final Season Part 3 is available now on Crunchyroll. The second, and likely final part, of The Final Season Part 3 is slated to air in the fall.
