It’s been ten years since the Attack on Titan anime premiered, and multiple upcoming events will celebrate that milestone.
A special stage event at Anime Japan 2023 saw the anime’s anniversary project announced. The project will begin in earnest next month, with various celebrations continuing throughout the year, including a tree-planting ceremony at Hita City, Oita Prefecture — the hometown of mangaka Hajime Isayama — and a voice actor panel at K Arena Yokohama. Moreover, many popular Attack on Titan collectibles and merchandise will receive re-releases, and the anime will collaborate with Gudetama to launch new 10th-anniversary items.
Isayama’s Attack on Titan manga first appeared in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in September 2009, with the series’ final chapter getting published in April 2021. The anime adaptation premiered its first season in April 2013; Wit Studio handled production for the show’s first three seasons, with MAPPA taking over animation responsibilities for the fourth and final season. Attack on Titan: The Final Season – Part 3 debuted on March 4, and the first episode featured the heart-wrenching death of a fan-favorite character.
What’s Attack on Titan About?
Set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity hides from the titular man-eating monstrosities in walled-off cities, Attack on Titan follows Eren Yeager as he strives to exterminate all Titans after the creatures destroy his home, and one devours his mother before his eyes. While the story frames Eren as a hero early on (albeit a very aggressive and angry one), the narrative eventually sees him transform into a genocidal enemy of humanity.
Like Isayama’s series, which stands as one of the best-selling of all time with over 110 million copies sold across the globe, the Attack on Titan anime has achieved an incredibly high level of success. For example, at this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards, the show won the Best Main Character, Best Drama, Best Score and Best Opening Sequence categories. However, it did lose the Anime of the Year and Best Continuing Series categories to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and One Piece, respectively.
Attack on Titan fans don’t have to wait for the 10th-anniversary re-releases and the Gudatama collaboration to spend their money on collectibles for the series. Most notably, Prime 1 Studio and Sideshow are accepting preorders of a heavily detailed statue that shows Eren, Armin and Mikasa in the midst of battle. The high level of detail comes with an equally high price; the item retails for an astonishing $2,985.
