Anticipation is ramping up for the upcoming fantasy K-Drama Island as the cast gathers for their first table reading.
As reported by Soompi, TVING released photos showcasing the cast of Island sitting down for their first table read. The table read had the four confirmed actors, Kim Nam Gi, Lee Da Hee, ASTRO’s Cha Eunwoo and Sung Joon, but it also included those with unconfirmed roles, child actors and director Bae Jong and writer Oh Bo Hyun. Director Bae said, “Although this is an unbelievable fantasy, I hope this drama becomes the role of oxygen and delivers good inspiration and touching emotion to many viewers.”
In the table read, Kim, who stars as the protagonist Pan, reportedly led the reading right from the first line he uttered, captivating the room. Lee, who portrays Won Mi Ho, a teacher who lands on Jeju island in the middle of a dangerous situation, demonstrates how the teacher maintains her calm during scenes of heightened tension.
Eunwoo Brought Priest John to Life
It was as if the role of Priest John was made specifically for Cha only with how the actor read his lines, the words flowing naturally. Sung was also impressive in his dedication to his role as Goong Tan with his blue-grey hair and excellent table read. While the table read was only the first time the entire cast came together, it was clear that everyone was passionate about filming Island.
Island Features a Complex Cast of Characters
TVING released a short teaser trailer and character posters early on. Based on the webcomic written by Youn In-wan and illustrated by Yang Kung-il, Island follows the third-generation chaebol Won Mi Ho who stays in Jeju to become a teacher and to self-reflect. However, the island is teeming with demons out to hunt her down. Pan is the immortal monster hunter dedicated to eradicating evil from the world. In the webcomic, Mi Ho pays Pan an exorbitant amount of money to protect her though it’s unclear whether their relationship will be the same in the live-action adaptation. After failing to save a young girl, the exorcist John vows never to make the same mistake again. Opposite Pan is his former partner Goong Tan who, like Pan, believes he must defeat evil but, due to an incident, no longer trusts humans.
Island premieres on Dec. 30 on Amazon Prime Video. Fans who want a sneak peek of what’s to come can read the webcomic on WEBTOON.
