Anime Fans Can’t Unsee Death Note Light’s Resemblance to SpongeBob

Death Note fans can’t unsee how Light Yagami and Spongebob surprisingly resemble one another.

An Anime-centric Facebook page called “Anime Feels” recently pointed out how the pair seemingly wear matching outfits to their followers, showing side-by-side images of the two characters. Viewers quickly realized that the comparison was on point, as Light’s tan jacket and red tie resemble the ones worn by the iconic yellow sponge. Death Note fans reacted with mixtures of amusement and horror, proclaiming that they “couldn’t unsee” the resemblance.

Light Yagami’s Evil Reputation in Anime and Manga

Unlike the fun-loving Spongebob, Light Yagami’s character is mired in violence and death. In Tsugumi Ohba’s acclaimed Death Note manga, Light Yagami embarks on a crusade to eliminate criminals from the world while evading discovery and capture by the famous detective, L. Light’s obsession with creating a perfect, crime-free world ultimately evolves into the desire to rule over human civilization as a God. Due to his maniacal intentions, many viewers consider Light Yagami one of the most evil characters in all media.

Death Note Becomes a Massive Shōnen Jump Hit

Ohba’s Death Note manga series launched in Weekly Shōnen Jump in December 2003, where it ran until its conclusion in May 2006. As of November 2022, the series has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. In August 2006, Shueisha published a light novel adaptation of the story, Death Note Another Note: The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases. Written by Nisio Isin, this novel serves as a prequel to the main series, covering L’s work on the titular murder case while delving deeper into the character’s past. Madhouse’s Death Note anime premiered in October 2006, running for 39 episodes until the series’ conclusion in June 2007. Nippon Television also produced a series of live-action Death Note films, the first of which was released in June 2006.

Netflix’s Live-Action Death Note Adaptations

Death Note’s most recent adaptation is Netflix’s 2017 live-action film. Directed by Adam Wingard, this movie loosely adapts Ohba’s original story, following Light Turner (Nat Wolff) as he attempts to create an ideal world using the titular notebook. Last year, Netflix announced that it would once again tackle Death Note, only this time as a live-action series rather than a movie. This new show is helmed by Matt and Ross Duffer, creators of the iconic Stranger Things franchise. Netflix also clarified that the series will be an entirely new adaptation unrelated to the live-action film. Information regarding the cast, crew and release date has not yet been announced.

Death Note is available to stream on Netflix. Spongebob Squarepants airs daily on its home network, Nickelodeon.
